This film, shot during the People's Commune of 1919, skipping through the Chronicle of Yesterday, evokes the time prior to the revolution. It draws a parallel portrait of the immorality of those living on the sunny side and the dissatisfaction and rebellious spirit of those living in the shade. The factory owner Hoffer cheats on his wife with the flirtatious widow millionaire, then hires the factory manager to seduce his own wife whom he intends to divorce when caught in the act. His plan is a success, and he tricks his wife, as he does his workers, out of their belongings. The woman feels that there is no more to do, yet the works manager is hopeful even after the armed suppression of the workers' mutiny. He travels East, to the land of revolutionary ideas.
