French society used to have a predominantly agrarian culture, but this has drastically changed in the past hundred years. Depardon spent his childhood on a farm south of Lyon and since then has been a kind of witness to those changes. In the first chapter, Profils paysans: l'approche (2000), he portrayed the tough life led by small farmers. Four years later, he returns to the mountains of central and southern France. Farmer Louis from the first episode has passed away, but Depardon meets some other old acquaintances - not just the last of the Mohicans, as many elderly farmers could be called, but also some young people who dare to become farmers. Many farms have been vacated and only get a second life as holiday homes, but there is also a woman in her early twenties - pregnant and all - who enthusiastically embraces farming. Depardon expects to complete the third instalment of his trilogy in 2008. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
