At first glance this presents a slightly different perspective of the birth of Jesus, and at second glance not so much. Yes, the main characters are animals, but that simply leads to more than half the movie being this weird slapstick that's supposed to lead to the characters getting to Bethlehem where a new king will be born. Then it gets really boring.
