The film breaks the mold of conventional documentaries about war and warriors. The is a psychoanalyst who brought the sensibility of his clinical work to the interviews, which are marked by an unusual intimacy and depth and provided a foundation of trust and familiarity between filmmaker and subject. The director’s guiding interest in this film was to create a reflective, psychological portrait, rather than a historical or political treatment of the Vietnam War or war more generally. This framing allowed the veterans to also engage the parallels between their experiences and those of veterans coming back from more contemporary wars. (San Diego Film Festival)
