Plots(1)

Over a decade ago, a meteor shower rained destruction on Smallville, Kansas. Since then, strange events have occurred, apparently because of the meteorites, which accompanied a spaceship carrying a toddler who grew into a teenager, Clark Kent (series star Tom Welling), in the care of his adoptive parents, Jonathan (series star John Schneider) and Martha (series star Annette O'Toole) Kent. Jonathan, Martha and Clark carefully hide Clark's unearthly powers, even from his best friends, Chloe Sullivan (series star Allison Mack--the intrepid investigative reporter for the Smallville High Torch--and the beautiful Lana Lang (series star Kristin Kreuk), the object of Clark's affection. But straight-talking classmate Pete Ross (series star Sam Jones III) knows the amazing secret and has proven himself a worthy ally to Clark, who has also befriended mogul Lex Luthor (series star Michael Rosenbaum), son of the ruthless tycoon Lionel Luthor (series star John Glover). After triggering an explosion on the Kent farm by trying to destroy his spaceship, resulting in Martha suffering a miscarriage, guilt-wracked Clark dons a mind-altering red Kryptonite ring and hides in Metropolis. He embarks on a one-man crime spree, capturing the attention of underworld boss Morgan Edge (recurring guest star Rutger Hauer), who persuades Clark to plan a major score: robbing LuthorCorp. Grief-stricken and unable to pay the bills, having devoted their resources to searching for Clark, Martha and Jonathan have lost their farm to Lionel. LuthorCorp has also taken control of the cash-strapped Talon coffeehouse from Lana. Now a junior reporter at The Daily Planet, Chloe reluctantly investigates Clark for Lionel. Meanwhile, on a deserted tropical island, Lex has survived the ocean crash of his corporate jet, unaware of what happened to his bride, Dr. Helen Bryce (recurring guest star Emmanuelle Vaugier), and the pilot. At the same time as his funeral takes place in Smallville, Lex fights with a cynical fellow castaway, Louis Leery Jr. (Ryan Robbins), and kills him violently. But when a seaman sees Lex's fire and rescues him, Lex realizes that Louis was a hallucination. When Chloe admits to Lana that she found Clark--a secret that he swore her to--Lana tracks him down and begs him to come home. Failing to convince Clark, Lana tells Jonathan where to find him, and father and son face off. But Jonathan has an advantage: Before leaving Smallville, he confronted Clark's Kryptonian father and acquired superhuman powers. While grappling, Jonathan and Clark smash through a 60th-floor window and plummet towards the ground. (Warner Bros. UK)
