Concert of Wills: Making the Getty Center

Plots(1)

In 1984, the go-ahead was given for one of the most prestigious building projects of last century: the Getty Center for modern art in Los Angeles. Two years later, when the plans were still in their early stages, the filmmakers started capturing the process, which was only completed on 29 October 1997, when the Getty Center was officially opened. For the design, the renowned architect Richard Meier was commissioned, famous for his austere white structures. His ideas may have been the starting point for this project, but they were not exactly accepted without any resistance. It soon became clear that many people wanted to assert their influence, such as the nearby residents, the trust fund, the landscape architect, the museum director and the interior designer. They turned this gigantic project into a fascinating blend of interests, ambition, conflicts and concessions. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
