HBO's new drama series, Lovecraft Country, based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff of the same name, follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback. (HBO Europe)

English A very confused series, it can't compare itself at all with the amazing Watchmen, although the first few episodes (actually literally the first two episodes) were quite sympathetically directed towards just that. The biggest problem is the overcomplicated plot and the fact that after the initial enthusiasm I gradually stopped wondering what happens next, even though very serious topics were being addressed. In the last three episodes, Lovecraft Country picked up a bit again, but it didn't help it much overall. Well, every day's not an enlightenment. Even so, though, the series offered me quite a lot of moments to remember (a lot of them are very gory scenes the like of which I've seriously never seen), and I think I would like to watch the excellent first episode full of palpable Hitchcock tension again.
