Mourning the death of their sister, Karine and Estelle find solace in a small mountain town in Mexico and witness the community’s preparations for the ‘Day of the Dead’. In this isolated yet vibrant pocket of Mexico, they observe the remembering of those who have passed from a new perspective. United in their grief but with somewhat polarized personalities, the sisters at times struggle to be fully present for each other. As they remember their lost sister, we are introduced to the woman they lost via snippets of video messages left before she passed. As they make home with the locals, an inner peace slowly gets to work on their grieving souls. Their hosts come to serve as their spiritual guides, contextualizing their rituals and showing the curious sisters how to honour a passing life with joy and happiness rather than sadness and mourning. The film is a joyous ode to rebirth and examines the complexities of sisterhood. Apapacho is the Mexican term for an affectionate hug, which this film provides for the soul in abundance.
