In 2014 scenes showing the arresting officer holding 44-year-old African-American Eric Garner in a chokehold circled the globe. Garner’s consequent death triggered a wave of outrage, particularly after the policeman in question was found not guilty. Four years later an unofficial, staged, court hearing involving experienced lawyers was held in an honest effort to heal a festering wound through a fair review. Courtroom footage is interspersed with the observations of both prosecutors and defenders, as well as external footage, to reveal the full background. Using the symbolism of a court drama, the film is a layered reflection, exposing not only the tragedy itself but also the social context and the complicated issue of the appropriateness of police force.
