In Martin Scorsese's romantic musical, Liza Minnelli plays a singer and Robert De Niro a saxophonist who join forces at the end of World War II. Touring as part of the same band, the pair become lovers, marry, but when she becomes pregnant she runs off to New York and as her singing career takes off the couple realise their relationship is doomed.
