One of the notions many hippies had in the sixties was that people should pursue a pure, authentic lifestyle in the country. Free nature was the place where man belonged. In the city he was anonymous and uprooted. This conviction resulted in the formation of communes in remote, rural places. In 1972 a group of hippies settled on Karlsoya, a deteriorated islet in Norway. The idealistic world reformers wanted to found an alternative society on the island, combining spiritual freedom, rock 'n' roll and the keeping of goats. In reality things went different. Not only did climatic conditions play tricks on the people, but internal discord resulted in great agitation. Karlsøya - mellom geiter, rock og muhammed examines what happened to the high expectations these people started out with.
