Four years ago, there were still quite a lot of 'Eskimos' living in Belgrade, people who did not want to be separated by national names and therefore refused to call themselves Croatians, Muslims or Serbs. Today they are just trying to forget what is going on around them. Many of them, they say, hundreds of thousands, have left the country, unwilling to take sides in the war. Those few who are left and are still trying to oppose the call for hatred and nationalism, are mentally isolated, seen as traitors by nationalists, or simply surrounded by a massive silence. There seems to be an agreement: "Whatever happens, keep on pretending it’s all normal. Just don’t mention the war!" Is there a choice except just giving up all hope, in a country ruled by warlords?
