The film starts with a quotation from Goethe: "Alles ist aus dem Wasser entsprungen, alles wird durch das Wasser erhalten. So auch der Mensch." Water for the millions in the city of Hamburg. The problem of supplying, winning, and treating water is examined in all its aspects. The observed people are addressed in a humorous and direct way. For example, the voice-over says "Guten Tag" to an angler. The camera follows the route of the water through the landscape. The process of winning and treating the water is explained. Biological and chemical filtering systems are clarified with the aid of spoken commentary and animation. The flow of the water leads us from reservoirs and underground storage rooms under Hamburg city to the waterpipes inside the houses. Only at the end of the film the daily use of water is dealt with. Fast-changing images show the different applications of clean water. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
