Constant Nieuwenhuys, influential member of the Dutch Avantgarde, works on his last ever painting with his faithful old dog Tikus by his side. As he puts the finishing touches to his work, we look back on the career of an exceptional artist, known simply as Constant, who co-founded the COBRA movement in 1948 and in the 50s and 60s created the futurist "New Babylon” series, a large project which explored theories of urban development and social interaction. In their moving film Thomas Doebele and Maarten Schmidt respectfully depict the last months of Constant’s life as he reflects on his considerable achievements. The artist’s memories are combined with archive footage of Constant as a young man in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Shortly after completing his final piece in summer 2005, Constant died, leaving behind a legacy of artistic experimentation and innovation. (DOK.fest München)
