An ambitious theatre director arrives in Gyulaháza from the capital. The aim of the young Debrődy is to shake up the locals and turn the life of the town upside down. He is ready even to take the risk of a scandal: instead of mawkish musical comedies and operettas like "Baroness Lili", he decides to put "Othello" on stage. He also disregards the conventions of casting. Othello is played by Barnaky, the conceited local hero of the operettas, but Desdemona's role is played by the not respected Mrs. Barnaky instead of Miss Susits, the leading actress. So, on the successful premiere of the jealousy play, the actors act out nothing else but their own lives. Viola proves to be successful, but defying the expectations of the news-monger public, Susits still has an opportunity to prove her talent in the role of Ophelia. (official distributor synopsis)
