In 1843 Antonia Kesselstadt wrote a book about Sobri, the famous outlaw of the Bakony hills. Her son sets out with a film camera to pursue the legend in America. Born in Sobor, forced into becoming an outlaw after his deserting the army, meek, never ever resorting to murder, powerful József Nagy, that is, Jóska Sobri, becomes the leader of a gang of desperados in the forest. Old Ferkó Milfait, literate and fond of books, is an important character in the group. The outlaws are ruthlessly hunted, which claims Rozi's, one of Sobri's beloved twin-daughters' life. At last the outlaw world of the Bakony hills is exterminated by the authorities, but Sobri survives. The film director meets aunt Mari in America, Rozi's twin-sister, and may contemplate the story at Sobri's grave. (Budapest Film)
