The furniture merchant professed Jew, Grandpa Gold skilfully survives World War I and the political upheaval of post-war years, revolutions and counter revolutions. A generation later his son marries a German Aryan girl so that history could not fool them. With the help of the hideout under the big desk of the furniture shop, they all are saved in 1944 from deportation. At the price of Matild, the hen's death, they also survive the end of the war. They stand the fifties as well, while the neighbouring judge and Hungarian Nazi housekeeper abye. In 1956 some family members leave the country. In 1963 Grandpa Gold dies.
