Diversion at the Museum

The scene is Hungary, at the end of the 30s. There are many who dislike Barcza, the disillusioned humanist priest-teacher of the high-school in the town. Barcza reorganises the collection of the local museum with the help of Ádám and his two friends. Márta joins them, and Ádám is soon in love with her. Ádám suspects that she is attracted to Barcza. He spies on them at school and provokes Barcza until he slaps him on the face. He surprises Barcza and Márta in the museum in the afternoon. The desperate teacher, disillusioned in his student, commits suicide. The case is covered up. Ä The story that put an end to his youth is recounted by Ádám, returning to his native town.
