Big Love (2006) (series)

English These extraordinary HBO series are a big deal. This time the starting point is a polygamous family in Utah. Those who enjoy or are generally interested in Mormons, the Amish, and other specialties of the U.S. are in the right place. There are reality shows about the Amish, but this is the first time I've seen a serious Mormon drama. Fortunately, the drama is written in the style of a family gangster movie à la The Godfather, which makes it much easier to navigate all the offshoots of strange communities like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the Community of Christ (fundamentalist or unorganized). Interesting names from the 90s like Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloë Sevigny, and newcomer Ginnifer Goodwin appear in the lead roles. #hbo

The Aftermath (2019)

English An adaptation of Rhidian Brook's novel. The film has some traces of the Czech Republic. The resulting film is an important report on the fate of people in post-war Hamburg. It's not a boring history lecture, and there is just enough realism to give the drama an unusual human dimension. The dashing Alexander Skarsgård serves brilliantly as a catharsis to the couple's relationship, which was disrupted one night during the bombing of London. Thanks to the shared pain of survivors of the Third Reich bombings, it is possible to find common ground. The ending of The Aftermath may be less epic than the film's direction deserves, but it's all the more human for it. Of particular note are the sets and, of course, the Barrandov costumes.

Manželské etudy: Nová generace - Marriage Stories: The New Generation (2019) (episode)

English Too many unanswered questions, and too many mere suggestions of reality. As it stands, we do not have enough information to make an assessment. The news of the marriage only scratches the surface and I think that is the biggest shame. A young family comes from the city to the countryside, with no certainty anywhere to be found. Soon they have two children, but they just have to have a big house before renovation, a huge garden, countless animals... In the end, they just bitterly say that things didn't work out. I was most disturbed by Mirka's declaration of conservatism, that she was against alternate care and two dads... Apparently, only people like her have the right to fail.

Hot in Cleveland - Season 2 (2011) (season)

English Season 2 is as naturally funny as a sitcom can be. Betty White and her crew are irresistible. They're passé for life in LA, but they're the golden ticket in Cleveland. All of them. The biggest highlights? Escape to an Amish colony and Jennifer Love Hewitt's first guest appearance as Emmy Chase.

Hot in Cleveland - Season 1 (2010) (season)

English Season 1 is a crash course in what to expect not only from Elka, the ex-wife of a mob accountant, but also from the Emmy Award-winning former pampered housewife and makeup artist to Hollywood stars. Ten episodes haven't killed anyone yet, so don't hesitate to see it. Hi, Ohio!

The New World (2005)

English This is beautiful. The more realistic story of Pocahontas and John Smith and John Rolfe. An emotional film that has everything. The preparations were demanding, not only in terms of time, which is why we can, unfortunately, forget about other films in a similar style being made more often.

Big Little Lies (2017) (series)

English Few would have guessed it from those Liane Moriarty books, but the result was a very good TV series with movie stars. That was the first season. Unfortunately, the second season had no book to draw from, so it all boiled down to a classic by David E. Kelley, and a judge was born.

Nesmrteľní - Projekt Alfa (2010) (episode)

English The episode perfectly combines Stevenson's classic with postmodern visuals and provides another great acting opportunity to Noga. I don't have the slightest reservations about it. What to recommend for comparison from the last hundred years? My favorite is Mary Reilly (1996), but otherwise, the most varied selection of adaptations is available in the 1910s to the 1940s. Between then and Mary, the topic was too devalued.

Nesmrteľní - Hon na legendu (2010) (episode)

English This episode is a great allegory for hell on earth. Images of aridity, decay, and ruin in the shadow of the endless struggle for glory are subordinated to the wonderfully dark Kramár and Noga. Moreover, in the context of the fact that otherwise I associate Don Juan only with DeMarco (1995), this one definitely wins all the way.

Nesmrteľní - Kvety a Lucia (2010) (episode)

English This episode is perfection itself, which I return to regularly and can never get enough of. A perfect variation on "The Lady of the Camellias" with an acting concert by Kanócz, Hilmerová, Kňažko and Geišberg. I also enjoyed Koleník... A perfectly balanced, wonderfully atmospheric and chilling melodrama. I even like it better than the same theme in Greta Garbo's Camille (1936) and it is comparable to the first version of Garbo (1927).
