Love & Death (2023) (series)

English This marks the third adaptation of a true-crime story from a small Texas town. While Wylie has since grown to a city with 57,526 residents, at the time of the case, it had only 3,152 inhabitants. The period atmosphere of the series reflects this fact, portraying a small community where everyone knows each other within the confines of local gossip. The characters are united by their lives in the Methodist church, and their relationships reflect this setting. People don't have time for each other, as they're too busy fulfilling societal expectations – men earning money and women raising children – all living their lives under mutual scrutiny. This alone would suffice for a study of unpleasant relationships filled with manipulation and lies, but David E. Kelley's team managed to weave a beautifully crafted romance into the early episodes, which could have been brilliant material for a romantic comedy on its own. And it's this genre blending that makes Love & Death an absolute delight. At the beginning, there's a charming and witty affair between Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons, halfway through, Lily Rabe is brutally murdered with an axe, and the conclusion is a typical grand courtroom drama precisely in line with the genre in which David E. Kelley reigns supreme. I'm not sure if the real Candy Montgomery (*1949) deserves so much attention, but over time, I'll indulge in the previous adaptations, especially Candy, because something like this is a true filmmaking challenge.

Whirlwind (2024)

English Peter Bebjak's second attempt at adapting Jozef Karika turned out much better than The Rift. Primarily because he bet on Aňa Geislerová, who has been among the exceptional talents and absolute professionals for many years and can effortlessly carry an entire film on her shoulders. Tomáš Maštalír has matured incredibly in those five years (alongside Geislerová), so together they form a pair that is a joy to watch, and experiencing all the partnership drama with them is no problem. The atmosphere is palpable, the setting of the Slovak retro sanatorium serves as an ideal backdrop, and there are several good jump scares. A side effect could be increased interest in stays in the town of Sliač.

Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge (2023) (shows)

English A special reality show from Mattel. Ashley Graham hosts pairs who carry out reconstructions of various parts of a real house in Barbie style from different decades from the 60s to the 90s. Then, outdoor seating areas in retro or contemporary styles are featured. The finale focuses on the dressing room and workspace. Creatives represent fans and favorite dolltubers, including, for example, Azusa Barbie. The special guest is, of course, Margot Robbie and other actors from the Barbie movie.

Batwoman - Loose Tooth (2021) (episode)

English This series isn't afraid to take risks, and it's as if they knew there were only a few episodes left, so they have something special prepared for each one. This time, they introduce the next generation of Killer Croc. The original comic character dates back to 1983, and in feature films, you can find him in Suicide Squad.

Maria Theresa (2017) (series)

English A co-production series brought together selected countries of the former Habsburg Empire to remind the current generation of Maria Theresa (1717-1780). Unfortunately, this attractive project relied on a folk-like biography by Mirka Zlatníková and Radek Bajgar, resulting primarily in a romantic idyll that reinforced the popularity of Vojtěch Kotek in the hearts of his aging fans. Nevertheless, credit must be given to the project for casting a trio of actresses in the lead roles and gently nudging weary viewers of the public broadcaster toward reflections heading in a slightly different direction.

Batwoman - Tell Me the Truth (2019) (episode)

English The first episode with the series' Julia Pennyworth. Casting Christina Wolfe was a classic whitewashing drama because in the comics she's the dark-skinned daughter of Batman's butler Alfred and Mademoiselle Marie (but only since 2014). Originally, everyone was white, and Julia started as Julia Remarque, whose character was most influenced by her mother being a heroine of the French Resistance during World War II.

Batwoman - Bat Girl Magic! (2021) (episode)

English The first episode with the mysterious Safiyah Sohail, known only to readers of Batwoman vol. 2 from the DC Rebirth era. In the comics, she's the former lover of the original Batwoman, but in the series, she's rewritten as Alice's nemesis.

Batwoman - Rule #1 (2021) (episode)

English Anyone who was waiting for Kate Kane's funeral has finally gotten their wish. All the supporting characters had enough time to grieve, and in the end, even the most unlikely twist was written very well.

Strange World (2022)

English The 61st Disney feature film is a modern blend of classic adventure stories from the Earth's core. The family dynamics are reminiscent of Indiana Jones, but one can practically recall anything from Verne's works to Narnia or Pellucidar. In the context of Disney films, the theme continues from Atlantis: The Lost Empire, but unfortunately, the result is the same flop as another classic, Treasure Planet. The promotion of Strange World was practically abandoned in advance, and only a minimal number of people even noticed that Disney was releasing another feature film in movie theaters. It wasn't a topic of note, which is quite a shame because, after a long time, Disney offered a classic family film for all age groups. Likeable characters, beautiful settings, and a pleasant message.
