The L Word: Generation Q (2019) (series)

English We've lived in the post-The L Word era for a decade, and we've lived through the reality show The Real L Word, but few would have thought we'd see a full-fledged sequel. And indeed, Generation Q is upon us. The new characters fit perfectly among the classic trio of Alice, Bette, and Shane. Angie has grown up and other characters are mentioned here and there... I hope GQ will be with us for a few very good years, because this bunch deserves it. Season 3 is coming soon.

Dear John (2010)

English Nicholas Sparks is the king of kitsch among women's novels, and his adaptations are exactly that. This one is at least somewhat elevated by a reasonably capable Amanda Seyfried, but Channing Tatum can't seem to work his facial muscles and walks around like a dummy for the entire film. On paper, it may be less appalling, although I don't put much faith in that either. An implausible exaggerated story with so many tear-jerking decoys...

Empire of the Sun (1987)

English An adaptation of the autobiographical book by J. G. Ballard was something I had been looking forward to for a long time. It has an interesting theme and a great cast (Christian Bale, Miranda Richardson, John Malkovich). Empire of the Sun may also remind us of The Lover by Marguerite Duras in its broad scope, but like other Spielberg retro films, I'm afraid it has become dated. This amounts to an interesting trip into the cinema of the 1980s. Young Bale was already incredibly talented back then, but for a deeper experience, you would need to see the film back then.

Zootopia (2016)

English The 55th Disney Feature Film. The combination of Disney and a town full of critters generates absolute yummy cuteness. They work with 3D animation long enough for you to enjoy the whole film and in the meantime just suppress the urge to stroke the main character. Judy Hopps could compete with all those friends from the touching story about Bambi. And that's saying something.

Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

English The 57th Feature Disney Film. The ultimate modern Disney movie full of Easter eggs and various jokes. The connection between the characters and the actors is something to make you smile. Gal Gadot as Shank, Jane Lynch, Alfred Molina... :)

Aladdin (2019)

English The mere mention of a live-action version of Aladdin has long terrified me. It is not an inspired story, but a retelling of the classic Disney story, which is a completely useless endeavor. And yet all it needed was a little more and we would have gotten an equally interesting new fairy tale adventure, like in Alice or Maleficent. But wouldn’t you know it, even with such poor prospects, Guy Ritchie managed to make a crazy colorful film that rushes by very quickly and almost amusingly toward its prescribed happy ending. It is not something I would recommend to anyone, but it’s also not the expected disaster.

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)

English Given that the script has already strayed very far from the original premise based on Carroll and Disney, a sequel to Burton's Alice can be considered almost original. For me, it was definitely very interesting to see how this strange world changes, how we meet these fairy tale characters again and again and for the first time we can almost understand them outside the established templates. An interesting excursion.

The Shape of Water (2017)

English Beautiful, charming, sweet. A great cast, great ideas, and creative direction. Years later, I'm still reminiscing and currently enjoying the comic variation on the "Shape of Elvira" theme. I'm almost afraid to watch the rerun lest the memory fade.

Shazam! (2019)

English Just as various children's or teen editions began to gain momentum on the DC website, one of the feature films was generously dedicated to the youngest fans. Adults might feel lukewarm about it, but the target audience is satisfied.

In Love and War (1996)

English This is weak. In the 90s, perhaps it was an attractive romance on the subject of Hemingway and Agnes von Kurowská, but today it’s just a memory of the years when such a serious subject was given to the likes of Chris O'Donnell or Sandra Bullock. It’s better to devote your time to the 1932 novel "A Farewell to Arms" or its first adaptation with Gary Cooper. Quality is guaranteed in these two works.
