Dirty Harry (1971)

English I just couldn't wait for Harry to kill that demented, braindead idiot, because I haven't seen such a stupid “killer" like this in a long time. I hope the real Zodiac Killer that inspired Dirty Harry had at least a little intelligence. Clint Eastwood carries the whole film; great wisecracks alternate with action sequences that were outstanding for that era. The music is surprisingly good and perfectly complements the atmosphere of the movie. A classic.

Reservoir Dogs (1992)

English Mr. White, Mr. Blond, Mr. Blue, Mr. Orange, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Pink are supposed to rob a jewelry store. Something goes wrong, or rather someone betrays them. Mr. Orange gets it in the stomach, and Mr. White tries to take him to a safe, pre-arranged meeting place: the warehouse. Mr. White is wondering what to do next when Mr. Pink comes in. They are wondering what the hell happened... This is roughly the beginning of Tarantino’s first excellent film, which, together with Pulp Fiction, is among the pearls of world cinema. Top acting performances, excellent screenplay, great directing, cult lines, and, above all, plausibility, make the Reservoir Dogs an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Far and Away (1992)

English Sometimes it pays to just sit in front of the TV and watch what's on. In the beginning it’s a bit of a nontraditional romantic drama which slowly unfolds throughout the film, with "Mr. Big" John Williams playing along. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman give great, natural performances and Ron Howard does a good job as usual. A pleasant surprise.

Running Scared (2006)

English Wow, Paul Walker shows his real colors and from now I will take greater notice of Wayne Kramer. It’s not often you see things like this. Plus, Karel Roden’s performance here puts him in first place of all my favorite Czech actors. Keep up the good work, Karel. As I was saying, the directing is excellent, reminding me at times of Tony Scott and his Domino. Great actors, an almost perfect screenplay (the very end went a little wrong), twists, shootouts... superb. I look forward to your next project, Wayne. :-)

Secret Window (2004)

English The excellent Johnny Depp in a slightly above average adaptation of King’s short novella Secret Window, Secret Garden. Everything goes perfectly until Koepp begins to play around and totally revamps the whole ending of the movie. I still don’t know why he did it. Because in his novella, King replaced cliché with a surprising outcome and so the punchline is completely elsewhere. Too bad, it was a good attempt.

xXx: State of the Union (2005)

English What on earth have they done to xXx? I knew what I was getting myself in to, but in places it wasn’t even funny, but drives you to tears. Even though, it’s true to say that you probably haven’t see such craziness for a long time. It reminds me of some futuristic game of chess - on the one side there are the “good" black pieces, and on the other, the “bad" white pieces. “The fight for peace in our beloved America." ;-)

Flightplan (2005)

English A dark, suspenseful thriller, that is a strange combination of all possible movies with the theme “trouble on board a plane". I was surprised about what happened with the story in the end and was gobsmacked about what the screenwriters had managed to put together. And about the kidnapper. He was about as suspicious as another ten people on that plane. But I admit, I had my suspicions ;-)

Die Hard (1988)

English Bruce Willis in the role of his life as John McClane. He quips, shoots and laughs. What else can you ask for?

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)

English An unusual approach to a fascinating story. A wonderfully fairytale approach with elements of thriller and sci-fi. Some of the scenes reminded me at times of my all time favorite, Star Wars. It’s just a shame that in places (especially during the second half) the movie rather loses pace; otherwise I’d give it 4 stars.

The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

English The perfect prototype of an action movie. Excellently thought-out action from beginning to end, with a wise lesson to be learned at the end. Perfect camerawork, amazing directing, Powell’s brilliant music, an excellent story... what more can I say? I hope Ultimatum will be at least as good, if not better.
