The Boys - Season 1 (2019) (season)

English An idea-packed adaptation of Ennis’ excellent comic book where superheroes are psychopaths, perverts or idiots, but at the same time prima donas, respected by the world, who need a rap on the knuckles from time to time. The only one who has the balls to rap them like this is Billy Butcher and the Boys. Logically, this is a little less hard-boiled than the comic book, but people just wouldn’t have accepted it otherwise. And there’s time enough to catch up in further seasons. The excellently made episodes in terms of dramaturgy, with a hidden surprise for fans, tick along like clockwork. The casting is exactly right. Urban and Quaid are the powerhouses on the human side, while Starr and Moriarty do the same for the super-side. But mainly, Homelander is a nice and juicy character and the ending leaves a lot of room for fantasy. Bring on season two.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

English Tarantino's linear homage to an era that doesn’t mean much to most Czechs. That doesn’t mean that it’s not fun. Even though Pitt and DiCaprio don't spend much time together on screen, the Dalton-Booth duo give an unbelievable performance. This is a Hollywood fairy tale through and through, in which Tarantino creates a better world through violence. Two hours might be a long time, but the director throws one entertaining scene after another at the viewer, accompanied by stylish, atmospheric music. A feelgood movie with a fantastic climax… I enjoyed even more the second time around. Thumbs up. Fuckin’ hippie motherfuckers.

Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)

English A strange mosaic of human destinies that meet in a hotel on the border between California and Nevada. It’s a bit like Goddard wanted to make a Tarantino movie, but he lacks the light hand and sense of humor. But still this is a decent and mainly clever, original watch; you don’t often see this sort of thing these days.

The Boys - The Female of the Species (2019) (episode)

English Now, this is great. The fantastic action on the plane doesn't need any great visual effects to put the viewer in the seat. There are powerful scenes that accurately portray the state of the world today. The dolphin abduction is perfect.

Long Shot (2019)

English Charlize and Rogen go really well together. :-D An excellent feelgood comedy with loads of references and typical stoner gags. Following a formula is a matter of course in this genre, but this film has something to say. Whether it’s an environmental warning, strong women in top positions, neo-Nazis or political corruption, Rogen always comes up with at least one good joke that provokes discussion over a beer. Pretty Woman with Cumguy instead of a hooker.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

English An Extremely entertaining, action-packed, nitro-boosted joyride. The B-movie plot interspersed with over-the top-action scenes, with a designer virus and a lone bad guy who values nothing more than good old friendship and family, is no surprise in this franchise. Diesel style. Leitch is aware of that this is essentially a B-movie, so he grabs it by the udders and milks its absurdities for all they're worth. Statham and Johnson’s well-honed one-liners are like something straight out of the '80s. The kinetic and clear-cut action pays respect to the old school, even though it’s upgraded like Idris Elba, who played a black Superman with unbelievable verve. The time flies by as we are taken to great locations and the cameos are the icing on the cake. Vanessa Kirby has style and at the end the whole thing cries out loud for a sequel. And I say yes to that. ... it melts their guts. She’s already nine years old, she’s ready to hear things like that.

A Better Tomorrow II (1987)

English The feeble story is made up for by a marvelous portion of action in John Woo on-form style. Particularly the finale is breathtaking. Fat is back and, even though Kenny lacks the layers of mystery that Mark has, he is at least equally cool. The dramaturgy limps rather, but it’ll bring a smile on the face of fans of the genre.

Cobra (1986)

English Call Cobra. A typical example of a cheesy 1980s action movie with cool Sly. Contempt for authority, dry one-liners, a screenplay with more holes  in it than a block of Swiss cheese and extreme consumption of ammunition. Where else can you hear great pop music and see bad guys hung on meat hooks? An incredible creation. It's as if Bruce Springsteen picked up an Uzi and started taking out criminals.

The Boys - The Name of the Game (2019) (episode)

English An excellent adaptation of the brutally entertaining comic book. The creators haven’t brought out the big guns yet, but what they have done his is still way above the standard. Explicit humor, violence and gallons of blood, you’ll even find the missing penises from Game of Thrones here. The storyline with Starr is handled superbly, and Erin Moriarty looks great. Urban rules as Butcher and it's good to see Simon Pegg again.

Stranger Things - Season 3 (2019) (season)

English The Soviets are in fashion this year. After remembering Chernobyl, it turns out that they had something to do with making holes through to the other side. The romantic storyline from the first episode doesn't have the wow factor that I would have expected, but once “Shitface" comes on the scene, it starts to get heavy. All apart from that brutal flashing light; horror can be done in other ways… The new characters are fine, the references are very well done this year and the season finale is a huge tear-jerker.
