And Then There Was Love... (2022)

English The trailer made this look like an intimate mother-daughter drama, spiced up a bit by an esoteric old woman. Before the screening began, the director made a speech; his expression and tone were just like the movie itself - monotonous, saying nothing and lacking emotion and intimacy. All of the characters are unbearable, but we don’t know why; the characters spend their time crying, but it’s impossible to feel any compassion for them; the potential of the actresses remains utterly unutilized. Even the fairly unusual topic remained almost completely unutilized. Only a couple of drops were squeezed out of it. Thank god for the mushrooms which take care of the ending of the whole movie. Perhaps they should have handed out some mushrooms to the viewers before the movie to make them happy instead of disappointed.

Ordinary Failures (2022)

English I would really like to give this a higher score, but I simply can’t. The topic is lucrative and original and you don't see something like this from Czech productions. Unfortunately, the story and the characters are utterly superficial and one-dimensional and it lacks depth and integrity. On the other hand, the acting trio is intriguing: it's just a shame they didn’t they didn't take advantage of their marvelous chemistry. Overall, however, I rate this positively and it certainly is worth watching. I also must sing the praises of the impressive original visuals and the music.

And Tomorrow We Will Be Dead (2021)

English A powerful story about two young fools, made with a steady hand and without unnecessary drama or brutality. The main protagonists are likable and give high-quality performances during moments of great tension. The movie is quite calm and even monotonous until halfway through, but what worked really well was the very slow rise in tension as the end drew near. Overall, this is not a breakthrough movie, but it leaves you with a chilling feeling.

Nico (2021)

English Nico is not a blockbuster, as immediately indicated by the runtime. It’s rather average, but what is fundamental about this movie is the topic and it was made to hold up a mirror to society. This insight deep into a wounded soul coming to terms with violent trauma is handled very well and the central protagonist is just perfect.

Precious Ivie (2021)

English This is a relatively uncomplicated drama that focuses on different types of characters. I really liked the performances of both female leads, between whom there was good chemistry. The theme is certainly interesting and in many ways enriching. Though the pace is somewhat slow and the runtime is perhaps a bit too long, these shortcomings certainly do not spoil the overall positive impression. The director Sarah Blaßkiewitz clearly knows how to work with a sensitive and contemporary topic with a great deal of care.

Above the World (2022)

English The story of a boy who escapes from humanity and the system into the mountains proves to be a very interesting subject. The treatment and narration of events are in the form of calm drama, but the actions of these characters from the Austrian countryside have bitter consequences. The portrayal of Elias is superb, compelling you to live through all the hardships he has to endure. The mountains represent liberation. The set design is minimalist, but it suits the movie perfectly, while the plot flows like a mountain stream, in some places trickling along peacefully and in others, it escalates and roars. The sounds of nature, animals, and even the silence of the mountains complement the entire film very well.

Love Thing (2022)

English I expected this movie would be another great light-hearted German comedy, as is usually the case when Elyas M'Barek is in the lead role. Unfortunately, his magic doesn’t work very well in Love Thing. The plot is very simple and forced; it has no momentum and feels fragmented, and even the actors, who seem rather stiff and rarely believable, can't save the situation. There are a few funny moments, but otherwise, there are a lot of vogue monologues dressed up as stand-up comedy, but it's not funny at all. In fact, there are so many forced lines of thought that it gets not just boring, but also annoying.

Toubab (2021)

English This comedy is definitely good. It took me a while to get used to the main protagonists and I didn't see any reason why they shouldn't both stay in prison until the end of eternity. However, the comical development of the situations and the gradual expansion of both the main characters world views appealed to me so much that I had a good time and even found the ending moving. The plot has momentum, the cinematography is excellent, and the soundtrack is quite pleasant.

Medieval (2022)

English I was looking forward to the epic Medieval. The trailer promised a dark story with hints of romance. Honestly, you can see that the movie had a big budget and high-quality set design. The actors are easy to watch and do a good job. But that's where the positives end; the rest is pretty worthless. The plot is empty and flat and the script is downright stupid. The characters behave confusedly and nonsensically, while the soundtrack is exaggerated and overly dramatic, absolutely forcing the viewer to experience the movie dramatically. Medieval had the potential to be a dark historical story of European stature, but Jákl served us Hollywood junk, which is over-sweetened, and its stupidity and cheap plot culminate in an unwanted happy ending.

Margrete - Queen of the North (2021)

English A well-developed Nordic legend that, despite its colorful treatment, looks realistic and dramatic, although it has nothing to really lean on. Trine Dyrholm is as excellent as always in her acting. Here, however, she takes the movie to another level with her bewitching performance. I like the original style, in that it is not gory, and that the viewer is spared stereotypical battle scenes. On the other hand, it emphasizes the royal way of thinking - to keep the union calm and maintain peace. The viewer can then enjoy the dramatic and exciting machinations, which are completed by an absolutely perfect soundtrack that will give you goosebumps.
