Doctor Zhivago (1965)

English I can't help comparing this film to The English Patient. It’s similarly conceived, with almost identically beautiful footage of nature and a great love story with a not so idyllic happy ending. But David Lean is a generation apart from Anthony Minghella, and this is reflected in the long takes, the starched emotions and, above all, the monstrous running time, which is quite often inexcusable. Is not that Doctor Zhivago isn’t pompous, it’s expensively produced, well-directed, and on top of that a fairly meticulous depiction of the turbulent history of early 20th century Russia. But if it was cut down by half an hour of camera pans and overlong facial expressions, it would be much more enjoyable for the viewer.

Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)

English Art above entertainment. Cyrano has excellent leading actors (especially Gérard Depardieu), exquisitely crafted dialogue lyrics and first-rate make-up. On the other hand, it has the classic problems of film adaptations of theatre plays: cardboard sets, deliberate overacting in basically all supporting roles and a bland screenplay. Theatre plays are hard to adapt, like video games, and few of them work out well. This one is bearable, but I wouldn't consider it an outright hit.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023)

English A flat storyline with a variation of the same plot seen hundreds of times, but with an excellent group of likeable characters and a truly amazing villain. The whole thing is dynamic, funny with some great scenes (the fat dragon) and a charismatic lead in Chris Pine. It's obvious that it was made by someone who has a feel for the material and a respect for fantasy. The potential for a sequel or saga is there, but next time it should be either darker or more original.

Yellowstone - Season 2 (2019) (season)

English A tad better than Season 1. This season does a good job developing all the key characters. It doesn’t stand still or stagger, we get more and more under the skin of the main characters, sometimes the creators allow it more and sometimes less. But when the key conversations, decisions and actually touching moments come, it's clear that the writers and casting didn't fail. In addition, this season was peppered with excellent neo-cowboy mobsters and the Beck brothers, who added the appropriate flavour to the already very interesting mosaic of individualism and desire for power.

Yellowstone - Sins of the Father (2019) (episode)

English A worthy finale without an overly dramatic or perhaps even epic climax, but with a decent and wholesome conclusion to the second chapter, where some passages were riveting, though most "merely" above average. I was expecting a harsher dealing with the Becks.

Yellowstone - Enemies by Monday (2019) (episode)

English One breathtaking scene after another. First an emotional catharsis over the fate of Jimmy and his family, then a situational scene in a luxury clothing store, and finally Tate leaving a big question mark. I can’t imagine any other option than a very tense tenth episode.

Yellowstone - Behind Us Only Grey (2019) (episode)

English The Becks are portrayed brilliantly and make more than worthy opponents to the rest of the cast. An interesting meeting of the three main players, otherwise the investigation begins and there is a relative calm after a difficult previous episode. Beth will never be the same, that’s for sure.

Yellowstone - Resurrection Day (2019) (episode)

English For a long time it seems to be the high standard we are used to, but the last few minutes take it to another dimension and remind us of the toughest "civil" violence, which we can enjoy in the sense that the brutality is still within acceptable limits, but at the same time the scene is naturalistic, dynamic and most importantly extremely gripping. Sheridan is in his element, like a fish in water.

Yellowstone - Blood the Boy (2019) (episode)

English An episode where, exceptionally, almost nothing goes wrong, and that in itself is quite a rarity. So, more or less, it's all about deepening the feuds and wounds of our favourite characters. And if that was not enough, there are also some likeable cameos from supporting roles.

Yellowstone - Touching Your Enemy (2019) (episode)

English A surprising maneuver by the worst-acted character in the series so far. Jamie is an interesting figure full of wrongs and inner turmoil, but Wes Bentley doesn't have the range to play this character the way it demands. Anyway, given the development of the story and the pace, it's still a great show.
