The Northman (2022)

English A distinctive creative vision. A dark, brooding historical fresco full of evil, prophecy, violence and pagan gods. Formally, everything is fine, script-wise and dramaturgically it is not so well put together. Some story twists and character motives are insufficiently explained and grasped, so the attempt at an artsy historical drama doesn't quite work, although it should be noted that it is presented in an unusually bold, uncompromisingly dark way, with no shortage of violence and brutality. But that alone is not enough.

Stuck in Love (2012)

English A house by the sea, shots of long beaches and waves, soft guitar. It might seem like another romantic kitsch, but it's not. Stuck in Love is a surprisingly smart, idiosyncratic and realistic probe into the relationship problems of several generations, each dealing with their own specific woes and joys, losses and wins. A sensitively made film with a well-chosen cast that has an ideal running time, very few deaf spots and is all in such a healthy natural spirit, just like Greg Kinnear playing the lead role.

The Crown - Marionettes (2017) (episode)

English Entertaining, suspenseful, inspiring and healthily critical. Such is this episode, which brilliantly reflects the open scissors between monarchy and democracy. Between traditions that have lasted hundreds if not thousands of years versus modern, dynamic and forward-thinking times.

The Crown - Beryl (2017) (episode)

English A one woman show by Vanessa Kirby and her wild collages of emotions that come to the surface. Matthew Goode is an interesting supporting character, he plays in a kind of veiled "Watchmen" way, the way we like it.

The Crown - Lisbon (2017) (episode)

English Although there are some minor or major digressions in the story of this episode (the divorce scandal of the supporting characters, the distrust of the government), the character of Phillip and his importance to the Queen and the royal family is again the main focus. Once again, the creators portray him brilliantly, without unnecessary moralising and pathos, in short, a man who sometimes makes mistakes, but at the same time abounds in high qualities.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

English A stylish flick whose anti-heroes are very reminiscent of other similarly famous films like The Magnificent Seven. A duo of legendary acting aces as partners for life and death; one a phlegmatic thinker, the other a charismatic heartbreaker. For the year it was made, the film surprises with dynamic direction, great pyrotechnic stunts and a timeless script and dialogues. I was worried that the actors would stare at each other for 5 minutes during the gunfights and then draw their colts, like in Spaghetti Westerns, but thank God that thing is absent here. Surprisingly still a fresh and memorable classic.

The Crown - A Company of Men (2017) (episode)

English An exceptional episode, the only one so far to show a person other than Elizabeth in the lead role. A tribute to Philip that gives him the opportunity to excel exactly as he needs to. A man who was in a very difficult situation and handled it with true aplomb. A man of many talents who dedicated his life to a "higher principle". From the perspective of the male ego, this could almost be a heroic feat. Deservedly, he is the one who takes this episode all to himself.

The Crown - Misadventure (2017) (episode)

English The second season opens without hesitation, with the creators following exactly the same style as in the first one. It remains relatively faithful in terms of history, with an accurately captured atmosphere and precise performances. Plus peppered with the Suez conflict and, surprisingly for an otherwise sedentary dialogue series, quite an action-packed finale.

For All Mankind (2019) (series)

English A great alternate history idea with a plethora of possibilities to grasp the concept of space conquest, and it works very well on the whole. Joel Kinnaman is the driving force, but the other actors, admittedly lesser known, are not lost either. Unfortunately, as is sometimes the case, the first season is unsurpassed, it had the best mix of space action, great alternate events of the time, and just enough room for the characters to keep it from being too mawkish, talky, and overly emotional. The second and third seasons no longer have an optimal balance and they slip into space and earth soap-opera that doesn't really go anywhere and just fills in the blanks, and is so over-the-top that it would have even the Armageddon guys rolling their eyeballs. Still, there are many scenes that will take space fans by the heart, and none of the creators need be ashamed of the outcome of the project.

War Dogs (2016)

English Pleasant one-off. Too politically correct and a bit simplistic, but as a sequence of funny scenes with the great acting tandem of Miles Teller and Jonah Hill, it's fine. If you don't see it, you're not missing out on anything groundbreaking, but as light entertainment that so peripherally winks at the absurdities of war conflicts, the fact that it's money laundering, and shows the "beauty" of Albania (and the fact that there are good businessmen there too), it's OK.
