The Furies (2019)

English A battle royale with references to slashers of the last century, it pretty much delivers on the level it promised. I mean, perfect gore, excellent make-up effects, the creators won me over in this respect, but the rest falls flat. The actresses are unfortunately terrible, the visuals look cheap and the final twist is a rip-off to more famous horror movies. Thus, I recommend it only for gore fans, everyone else can ignore it. 60%

Keep an Eye Out (2018)

English I’m not very familiar with Quentin Dupieux, so I didn't know what I was getting into, but Benoît Poelvoorde is more or less always a guarantee of quality and this time France pleasantly surprised me, not so much with humour, but with ideas, tension and interesting twists (the twist that comes in the 10th minute is perfect), and the finale is very unexpected. For a film that takes place 90% in one room, there are more than enough comic situations. Decent, short and entertaining. 75%

Crawl (2019)

English Alexandre Aja is back on the scene after a long time with survival film featuring an alligator that, together with Rogue, is one of the best things you can find with alligators. It has a fast pace, a decent amount of suspense, believable alligators that command respect every time they're on the scene, and there's a bit of gore, even if most of it is hidden underwater. I genuinely enjoyed myself and with how miserable has been in horror, I'm not ashamed to give it 4 stars. 70%

Rebelles (2019)

English I expected a little more from Rebels. It's not the typical funny French comedy, it's a little bit of an European gangster flick and it plays on a more serious note. In terms of story, the film offers nothing new, but fortunately it doesn't bore and can entertain on a boring afternoon. It's a film for undemanding viewers and the gentlemen can look forward to Cécile de France, who is still hot at 44. 60%.

In Fabric (2018)

English Peter Strickland isn't a director I seek out and I wasn't too impressed with his much lauded In Fabric. It should definitely be noted that the director has an eye for detail and the references to Italian Giallo work well, but that's where it ends for me. It’s an uninteresting film focusing on a critique of consumerism and the fashion world, with a strange narrative, minimal horror elements, lots of bizarre scenes that don't actually make much sense, and I didn't find the supposed humour funny at all. It's a film so weird that you either like it or don't care about it, like I did. I wasn't entertained and the only thing that caught my attention was the washing machine scene. 40%

Serial (Bad) Weddings 2 (2019)

English Weaker for me than the first part for me. The charm of the theme has faded a bit, but here the director has prepared some interesting ideas, twists and thought processes. The humour rarely worked for me. I prefer situational humour in French films rather than dialogue, so for me it's slightly above average. 65%.

Annabelle Comes Home (2019)

English Why is this even happening? Gary Dauberman makes his debut in the 3rd entry in the Conjuring Universe and it's the weakest link, much like this year's La Llorona. Nothing happens for an hour and once the creatures start coming to life in the final third, it's at least watchable, but there's no atmosphere or thrills to speak of. It was filmed in an almost made-for-TV way and I hardly enjoyed it at all. 40%.

The Golden Glove (2019)

English German director Fatih Akin (In the Fade) gives us a portrait of a violent, woman-hating serial killer on the rampage in 1970s Hamburg. Jonas Dassler is perfect in the role, and the transformation of a likable young man into a sleazy madman thanks to some great make-up is impressive. The film is very authentic, filmed in a retro style and takes place either in an apartment or in a local dive bar where you won't like anyone at all, because the dregs of society of the time will be there. The protagonist kills a total of four women, but the murders are out of frame, so rather than gratuitous violence the director presents psychological pressure and maintains a certain rawness and dirtiness with the setting and the storage of the corpses in the apartment. I was hoping for something a little more gritty, but still, for fans of serial killers, this is a must-see. 65%.

The Hustle (2019)

English Anne Hathaway steals the show again after Ocean’s 8, she is obviously good in these roles, and the funny Rebel Wilson is a nice second. The film may not bring anything new to the table (Will Smith's Focus, for example, is much better), but it's enough for a dull afternoon. The surprising twist at the end was quite good. 60%.

The Boys (2019) (series)

English This year's series cannonade continues and we have another hit that wipes its ass with all the comic and superhero movies. The Boys is an awesome dystopia that presents an original world of superheroes who don't care that much about people and don’t mind dead bodies. Karl Urban as the mercenary who despises superheroes is perfect (his wisecracks and Oscar-worthy acting), the same goes for Homelander (Antony Starr from Banshee plays the arrogant "Superman" with grace). The rest of the heroes, Starlight, A-train, Queen Maeve, the Deep and Black Noir, are rather bland. The series has great pacing, well dosed twists and turns, apt black humour, solid action, shocking violence with juicy gore, impressive visuals, and also an engaging story with an excellent finale that lures in the second season beyond belief. An eight-hour ride as it should be and a must for all superhero fans and those who don't love them. 90%
