Paris, Texas (1984)

English This road movie is considered to be Wim Wenders' best film and I basically agree with that. It is a very slow film that relies on atmosphere, camera work that utilizes amazing American exteriors, and the ability to perfectly capture subtly conveyed emotions of the film's characters. Above all, it relies on perfectly chosen music, which complements the story. The actors we cast well and have precise acting performances. Harry Dean Stanton is beautifully worn out, Nastassja Kinski is fragile and innocent even during her performance in a peep show, and the child actor performs flawlessly. Overall impression: 90%. It is a film about the breakdown of a marriage and an attempt to return, if not to the role of a partner, then at least to the role of a parent.

Duck Soup (1933)

English Duck Soup was my first and last encounter with the work of the Marx brothers. If this film can be considered a showcase of their film productions, which it really is given the direction and evident attempt at an alternative style of cinematic language, then I have to say that the style of humor that was very popular at that time is simply not for me, as it seems cheap and pandering. Overall impression: 40%.

King Ubu (1996)

English I don't think I'll ever see F. A. Brabec film a great action movie, even though I've experienced quite a lot in my life. The film has typical features of his work, i.e., excellent cinematography, artistic stylization, and a quality cast, but beyond that it falls short. Fans and connoisseurs of Alfred Jarry's work will probably suffer, and others will appreciate the absurdity of the story and its slapstick, although it is far from the quality of the original play. What stuck in my memory the most was Lucie Bílá with her film song. Overall impression: 55%.

The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)

English At the time it was made, it was an above-average film both thematically and in its execution, but I find its reviews to be quite exaggerated. Essentially, it's a classic studio romance with the necessary happy ending at the end. But that's how it goes; famous directors have it easier with fans. If I overlook a few cuts and camera movements, Orson Welles didn't significantly impact the film. Overall impression: 55%. The film might be interesting for its perspective on the beginnings of motorism in the United States, with the prophetic commentary of Eugene Morgan.

Lisa (1998) (series)

English A didactic cartoon series about a little girl who explores the world of adults through her family and adventures in the surrounding area. It is intended for the youngest children and corresponds to that with animation, slow speech pace, and simple vocabulary. Despite all of that, it maintains a special poetic and decent level. Overall impression: 70%. The series is greatly aided by humorous exaggeration.

Bolek i Lolek (1963) (series)

English This famous Polish animated series, considering when it was made, is more so for the older folks who remember it. It has never completely appealed to me with its style. It is a cartoon slapstick, created in response to American Disney-style slapsticks. Overall impression: 55%.

Canaris Master Spy (1954)

English From today's perspective, it is an average film that, in my opinion, wants to show Canaris in a better light than would correspond to his actual motives and actions. After all, not enough time had passed since the end of the war, and the creators did not maintain the necessary distance. They were also fulfilling a societal task, which was to diminish German responsibility for World War II and to show resistance against Hitler and Nazism. Overall impression: 55%.

A Drop Too Much (1953)

English The first truly independent film by Břetislav Pojar after he decided to step out of the shadow of his studio boss Jiří Trnka. Although Trnka was the creator, the screenplay and direction were fully in Pojar's competence. For its time, it is innovative and precise, and the film received even greater acclaim abroad than at home. A black slapstick about how alcohol in a driver's blood can cause a lot of problems... The impression of being drunk was created by camera movement and blurring, or by drawing facial expressions on the puppet's head. A laborious and original film that didn't quite appeal to me in terms of style, as I still prefer Pojar's poetic films... Overall impression: 65%.

Brother (2000)

English Kitano made his gangster film with a focus on character psychology and development, although it does not shy away from depicting brutal violence. Genre fans may be disappointed by the slow pace of storytelling and the breaking of genre clichés. The film actually only marginally deals with Japanese organized crime and is rather a film about globalization, the intermingling and clash of cultures within the realm of crime. The film is essentially a fateful drama of a man who was able to renounce his country, language, and culture, but unable to break free from the social class and way of life he came from and had led since childhood. Changing the value hierarchy is impossible for the main character... Overall impression: 75%.

Inside Deep Throat (2005)

English Deep Throat is indeed a famous, albeit semi-amateur, mediocre pornographic film that wouldn't be worth watching for me. However, a very interesting documentary used its title. It combines an attractive theme and professional editing and gives us genuine entertainment alongside educating about a certain subject and period. The film not only tells the history of pornography in the world of cinema but also explores society's perception of sex, its taboo, and the confrontation of sexuality with the Christian religion, specifically its fundamentalist interpretation. It also touches on contemporary politics and portrays the feminist movement in a negative light. It reveals that many renowned filmmakers started as creators of commercial pornographic films and, last but not least, it entertains the audience with a series of scandalous details from the lives of porn actors and directors. Overall impression: 95%.
