Story of a Real Man (1948)

English Of course, it is a propaganda film, but professionally directed and brilliantly acted by Bondarchuk, who started a very successful career with this role. Naturally, the film exhibits a slight detachment from the war years, so the pathos is understandable. Nonetheless, in the context of its time, it is an exceptional film that speaks about the war on the Eastern Front and the era it was made in. Overall impression: 55%.

Red Bells (1982)

English Mexico in Flames can be credited with a number of positives - a decent budget, excellent cinematography, great locations, strong casting, and experienced direction. All components of the film, including the music, are dedicated to the main goal - to create a magnificent historical fresco about the Mexican Revolution, understandably somewhat (quite a bit) idealized. Overall impression 80%. I would have no complaints about the formal aspects of the film, but the content would warrant a lengthy commentary...

Renegade (1992) (series) Boo!

English Considering how hopelessly stupid this series was at its time, it has a very high rating, which can be attributed to the age profile of FilmBooster members and nostalgia. From the very first season, it presented a pile of clichés and stereotypes, and subsequent seasons completed the wreckage by rehashing and plagiarizing itself. Overall impression 10%.

Enchanted (2007)

English Enchanted fully corresponds to the traditions of the Disney studio focused on producing commercially successful family films with fairytale themes in the most conventionally imaginable way. It is desperately cluttered, colorful, romantic, emotional, and above all, extremely saccharine. It's like eating four large chocolates at once. Not that I, with my notorious sweet tooth, wouldn't try that, but the result would be a ruined stomach - and that's how it is with this film. It is an adorably kitschy work that many can swoon over, but it simply doesn't sit well with me. Just like the artistic style of classic Disney movies doesn't sit well with me. Overall impression: 40%. The only thing worth mentioning is the visually remarkable closing credits that imitate the style of books painted by medieval monks.

Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)

English Judgment at Nuremberg understandably utilizes the interesting and emotional topic of war crimes and their punishment, and partly the high reviews are also caused by that. On the other hand, the screenplay is of high quality and fully utilizes all the possibilities that the subject matter provides. It deals with all the conflicts and dilemmas that occurred at that time, and although it is not completely historically accurate, it gives a good artistic account of this phenomenon in world history. Minor historical inaccuracies can of course be found, for example, in the scene where Beneš resigns and as a result, American troops are mobilized. They were mobilized during the February events. Beneš resigned a few months later when the situation was already fully "stabilized," and the Americans naturally remained calm. From a directorial point of view, Stanley Kramer made the situation easier by selecting actors who fully correspond to the stereotypes that the audience expects from characters in a courtroom drama. If he were more daring and proceeded the same way as Forman, who cast a beautiful actress with an innocent face as the main antagonist in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, this film would be more interesting. However, it corresponds to the time of its creation. Overall impression: 80%. By the way, the essence of dealing with the Nazi past consisted of a compromise with the then-German political elite, and, for example, Nazi generals escaped with ridiculously low sentences and were released after a very short time. In this respect, the film hit the nail on the head...

W.I.T.C.H. (2004) (series) Boo!

English I have never before given an animated title a Boo! rating, although such undoubtedly exist... What is repulsive about this is the absence of even the slightest perspective or ideas, the effort to convey any message, or any creativity. It represents the hardest commercialism, the very embodiment of the mass culture industry - not at all innocent entertainment for children but rather akin to kitschy adult soap operas and action series, tailored for a specific age group, colorful and suitably energized. Overall impression 10%. It is indicative that no one bothers to translate the title - considering its connection to an extensive market of merchandise related to the series, this is undesirable and significantly reduces advertising costs on an international scale...

Tremors (1990)

English This horror film rises slightly above the genre average precisely because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Tension is consistently alleviated by dark humor and small directorial touches. From an acting standpoint, it’s nothing exceptional, but it is competently acted. Overall impression: 60%.

Freaks (1932)

English A legendary classic, which makes sense to assess in its contemporary context and which, nevertheless, still surprises with the decent craftsmanship of the film crew, direction, and acting performances. In terms of the dramatic plot, it is a relatively conventional matter, but considering the emphasis on the human side of physically disabled individuals and their right to dignity, it is a significant film with an ethical dimension. Overall impression: 80%.

San Babila-8 P.M. (1976)

English Genre-wise, San Babila-8 P.M. is a political pamphlet, which is not meant pejoratively. It is simply a more politically declarative film than a genre crime movie. However, it is clearly made professionally, with good performances and direction. Nevertheless, the political message of the film has been somewhat simplified. The film is based on the positions of the intellectual Italian left of the 70s, which stood against the establishment and had a relatively radical and traditional class vision. To some extent, this corresponds to the cultural conditions in Czechoslovakia in the 30s. In this conception, fascists logically had to come primarily from the circles of spoiled golden youth, although the social reality of neo-Nazism was already significantly different back then, with a lot of involvement from working-class youth. The dangerous far-right in Italy were radically conservative officers of the Italian army and secret services, or older gentlemen from financial and industrial circles, who nostalgically remembered Mussolini and sympathetically looked at Franco, Pinochet, and the black colonels in Greece. It was these individuals who were behind the liquidation of Aldo Moro. The film also has an interesting musical aspect. Overall impression: 70%.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

English The Conquest of the Planet of the Apes might not have been such a disaster and could actually be an acceptable genre film if it hadn't been preceded by three movies and an excellent novel. From the perspective of genre fans, it's understandably a very exhausted theme, further diminished by its deviation from the original novel’s idea. While the same screenwriter stayed on board, he abandoned the original concept and simply wrote an allegory reflecting the political climate of the late 1960s, including racial unrest and political storms against the establishment. The ape masks are merely props, and the plot of the previous films serves only as a starting point. However, fans and audiences were simply too weary, and the film suffered from an overly constrained budget. It also overlooked some logical consistencies in the story. Overall impression: 40%.
