Tokyo Ghoul:re - Season 1 (2018) (season)

English Best Tokyo Ghoul  season? Well, I donť think so! I am sorry; but I found the brainwashed Kaneki living under the identity of Haise Sasaki quite boring. His entire Quinx Squad was full of characters I could not relate to over the course of twelve episodes. So then, when someone in the show was in danger or even died, I was left completely cold, and it did nothing for me. I was expecting suspense and great controversy since the former ghoul was now an investigator. I was expecting characters from Kaneki's past to make imaginative and interesting attempts to bring back Kaneki's memory. In addition to that, I was somewhat disappointed, probably most of all, that one of my favorite characters, Gourmet, was reduced to a wreck for most of the season. He only woke up towards the end to achieve what? Well, even the rest of my favorite ensemble from the previous seasons were just there. They belong in this world, and their turns are probably still waiting for them, even though that could only happen next season. I did not enjoy watching the narratives and investigations from the other side. The best bit was probably the auction part and then the season finale itself, where at least something was finally concluded. So, I can say that after this rather mediocre and uninteresting season, I am at least looking forward to the next one. However, the storytelling was quite good; everything was presented clearly and understandably. The action and fight scenes were again full of gore, with so many severed limbs. Well, all the nice things for some people. All in all, it is a real shame that I enjoyed the fight scenes, even though I could not care about the people in them this time... 5.5/10.

Ulysses: Jeanne d'Arc and the Alchemist Knight (2018) (series)

English Somehow I just cannot think of anything to say about an anime series mixing Joan of Arc with the Philosopher's Stone other than that it just seems like a bunch of tedious crap to me. Dropped after episode four - 2.5/10.

UzaMaid! (2018) (series)

English I could fully understand that from an ethical standpoint, a narrative featuring a woman with such an unhealthy obsession with little girls, combined with the things she occasionally let out of her mouth, is basically really horrible and not really something to be messed about with. However, this is actually just a comedy, an exaggerated satirical comedy that no one should take too seriously. This is not (in my opinion) pedophile fan service, there are no overly erotic scenes and there are no scenes with a strongly suggestive erotic subtext. Therefore, I think there was no reason to watch it nervously. The narrative is really sweet at times, featuring a likable child protagonist with a sad backstory, a few psychological issues, and a woman with an extreme and completely unhealthy interest in this child, and there is yet another woman, who has completely over-the-top masochistic tendencies (among other things). This show is quite weird, this show is quite crazy, and this show is often a bit stupid. However, after saying all that, I still quite enjoyed it... So personally speaking, the entertainment value of this show is unfortunately largely overshadowed by my personal reservations regarding certain moral grey areas, and so in the end I am not going to go below 5.5/10.

Violet Evergarden (2018) (series)

English I had not reviewed this untill now, and something tells me that now is the time to fix that. Even after almost two years, I have no problem remembering the narrative of Violet Evergarden (at least the bare bones of the narrative), I remember most of the characters and my impressions of it at the time. So it makes sense that, unlike some of you, this anime series must have left a mark on me. I cannot easily forget the stunning animation and great soundtrack. As far as the emotional aspect is concerned, some of the narratives touched my heart and I was also intrigued by the show’s premise of delivering feelings in the form of letters, which in this day and age is probably rather neglected because of modern technology. However, (and, I am agreeing on this with Zíza), I also remember some of the narratives where the emotions seemed quite forced and came on too strong, and so it never really got to me and did not seem natural enough to consider giving this anime series the highest rating. I liked the main female protagonist Violet, and I liked her efforts to understand human feelings, especially the one the romantic poets thought was the most beautiful. I also liked her almost machine-like nature, which gradually became much softer. I was personally very satisfied, and it was a pleasant experience. 7.5/10. P.S. If you are a pragmatist rather than a romantic, then, of course, you are going to see some things from a completely different point of view, even though we can all at least agree that the animation is breathtaking, so if you want to see magnificent graphics/visuals…

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku (2018) (series)

English Love is hard for otaku, love is hard for everyone, so why, after watching this anime series, do I get the impression that it is not that hard with an adult perspective and some humor and tolerance? Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku is a likable spring romantic comedy that works in all aspects. It easily puts both an amused smile on my face and the kind of goofy expression that accompanies something pleasant and endearing. The main credit for this goes to the characters, who are excellent. Hirotaka is cool, Narumi is cute, and the other couple (Hanako and Tarou) are likable and quite funny. The most important thing is that I liked all four characters and enjoyed watching them - the chemistry between the characters works. There is a spark between the two main protagonists. After eleven episodes you can see that theirs is a relationship that was initially just based on the fact that they both have similar interests and have known each other since childhood. This meant that they did not have to pretend in front of each other, this couple evolved and grew, and you could see that they liked each other. Well, the other couple is again an excellent example of teasing. Relationships like this can be intense, especially when it involves two temperamental personalities; it makes it look like the proverbial blowing hot and cold. The reconciliation and those moments of peace, the kissing, and making up are just worth it. Well, in other words, the relationships are emotionally charged, and they are presented quite realistically. Combined with the fact that each character is an otaku (or, if you want, each character has a hobby bordering on obsession), there is a lot to follow. There is no shortage of entertaining situations - a pleasant 8.1/10.

Yotsuiro Biyori (2018) (series)

English Many of us have a little place that we love to go back to; for some people, it could be a restaurant; it could be a café; and for others, a tea house. These are places where we feel comfortable, we can take our friends and acquaintances there, or simply go there alone when we need to relax. Most of the time, these places have a great atmosphere, ambience, and friendly service, which impressed us so much we returned because we felt so comfortable there, it just made sense. Well, the tea house in this show is just such a place, and it is incredible how the anime’s authors have managed to convey the pleasant feeling of such a place to someone sitting on the other side of a flat screen. It is obvious that the setting of a traditional Japanese tea house can be impressive, as is the bamboo-lined entranceway alone, and so is the tea house: it is so traditional and cozy. You can get that pleasant feeling of being a guest in this lovely space. The staff make your visit enjoyable, as they are so calm and helpful - people who make you feel that they care about their customers because this also enhances the pleasant feeling of security. In other words, they make you feel right at home. What would a tea house be without great tea, delicious cakes, and even some good food? I have always admired how the creators of some anime series can portray food, how colorful and beautiful, and how they can show the enjoyment of preparing and then eating something like that. I have seen this in a few shows. However, it still works for me and can still make me crave something tasty. In other words, this anime series seems to substitute the complex experience of one incredibly fantastic restaurant that does not necessarily have to lead to other worlds to convey its magic (I could not resist the Restaurant to Another World reference...). Everything is laid-back, and even the biggest dramas are resolved with a certain calmness as if there is nothing that a delicious cup of tea and something sweet is not going to fix. However, it is not always so peaceful and charming; this anime’s writers know that they are not able to solve everything immediately and so they succeed in incorporating a grown-up and realistic approach to it all. They do this, for example, by making sure that when you expect a significant and dramatic happy ending, all you get is a calm and quiet exchange of emotions without words. On the other hand, it does not seem to do much, you still feel that it still did. Similarly, the guests seem realistic, and they have their worries and problems they have come to take a break from, or think about how to solve, which the helpful staff is happy to help them with. It is not silly or overly dramatic. However, it is rather just about the ordinary things and worries that any of us can experience. Okay, sometimes it is a bit over the top, although mostly it just comes across as light banter that could not offend anyone and is just entertaining. In the end, Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori is a very pleasant, endearing, relaxing, and charming show. Sometimes it even gives you some food for thought. I thought it was the biggest surprise of the anime Season 2018, as I would have never expected to have enjoyed a narrative concerning four very likable gentlemen and their tea house. Well, as a result, I consider it also one of the two best anime series of the spring 2018 releases in my mind - 8.3/10.

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs (2018) (series)

English This show features an endless series of unfortunate coincidences! Who would have expected that the ghost you are going to exorcise would be a gifted and pretty girl, and who would have expected that every time you stumble or levitate because of the girl's supernatural powers, you are always going to fall so badly that you put your hand right onto some girl’s boobies? So then everyone is going to think you are a pervert, and they punch you so you fly up into the air again, and when you land, this time you fall into a pool where some naked girls are swimming, and they cannot understand why it is not your fault. So you are now considered to be an even bigger pervert, perhaps the worst, biggest pervert of them all! I am sorry, however, that is not how it really works. The biggest perverts (and perverts in general) are the ones who are always thinking about sex, and who are literally obsessed with sex - the pervert is someone like Issei Hyoudou! This is the biggest difference that makes a good main male protagonist in an ecchi anime series and is what separates him from this poor guy who just keeps stupidly falling down, and someone has to beat him up at least three times in every episode without the person in question being responsible for anything. It is supposed to be a comedy, and the first ten ecchi scenes you see probably are, although in time you may find that there is nothing really very funny about the constantly repetitive coincidences, and the fact that the girls' exaggerated and unjustified reactions are embarrassing rather than amusing. Unfortunately, you are also going to find that you are probably the only one who sees it that way because if there are boobies in the show, most people are not going to care about if the boobies are well and effectively incorporated in the scene. Why? Because boobies!! So it in the end it does not matter that this anime series has what I would call a bunch of tropes, stupid and embarrassing fan service, dumb jokes, and a tragic main male protagonist who is a complete dumbass. It does not matter that in almost every scene where something is supposed to be visible they once again moronically use the "divine rays of light". There are bound to be fans of this show regardless, and there is a difference between quality ecchi (nice and uncensored), meaningful ecchi (we do it because we want to), sensual ecchi (it is really sexy), and this bullshit, which, the way I see it, no one is going to understand... An empty shell may look pretty, however, it does not give you anything to take away, and sometimes a repetitive joke really stops being funny after the second or third time. This is not for me - Dropped after the third episode and 3/10.

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. (2017) (series)

English As a rule, MADHOUSE animation studios chose the material that should be of great interest to their audience, and I think they rarely took a wrong turn. This show looks interesting from the opening. You could speculate if it is going to go in the direction of a government conspiracy, coup d'état, power struggles within a government agency, or deal with various cases of various frauds and crimes within the different state branches. You could even assume this is not going to be the kind of show that grabs people by how good it looks. The characters are not particularly beautifully illustrated, although to be fair, I guess that is in keeping with the original manga art style. Also, this show is not going to captivate people with tons of action and violence, as it seems more like they are going to go for a story that focuses on solving things with reason rather than force. The problem with this show is that it consists mainly of dialogues between the characters, so there is not much chance of action. Plus, everybody is trying to be mysterious, even though in reality, a lot of stuff happens. Also, when the stuff happens, they give the impression that it just happened and came out of nowhere but did not really affect anything. Even the biggest twists are presented in a dry, emotionless way, so any atmosphere and interest go more and more down the drain with each passing episode. I kept waiting for it all to kick off, and it just did not. Most of the time, there is such a really long wait for something you think is coming, and even though you are right to expect it, the longer you wait, the more you start to not care, and you are left wondering if it was really worth it. In conclusion, the last episode is definitely the best of the whole season and more or less gives a reason for everything that came before it (so it does not feel like a complete waste of time). However, although I really enjoyed the last episode, it could not redeem the oddly unengaging majority of the show that got me to that point. It is not bad, even though it is probably the most boring and least dramatic anime series about a government conspiracy I have ever seen. However, because of the last episode, a couple of likable characters, and a good soundtrack, I eventually awarded it 5.2/10.

A Centaur's Life (2017) (series)

English I have seen monster girl themes elaborated into different forms, from crazy and unacceptable eroticism with animals (and apparently there is even monster girl hentai) to quite good comedies, where they used the characters' potential as monsters for various highly amusing situations. Thanks to these comedies, I have not given up on the subject matter yet, and I would still give a chance to a show where the main female protagonist is a centaur girl (because sometimes it turns out that a white tiger could be really likable in the main role). This seemed like just another perverted show during the first minute, although in the end, it is not like that at all. A Centaur's Life will most likely be seriously meant slice of life anime series featuring a monster girl. In other words, cute little monsters/animal girls will do normal things, they will do cute things, and in a form appropriate to being monsters/animal girls. However, the problem is that the first episode was not enough to convince me that this could be amusing. I did not laugh even once because there was nothing to laugh about. The other problem is that I did not even find it cute, more like weird. In my view, the most interesting idea presented in the whole first episode was the elaboration of Darwin's theory about the evolution of species ad absurdum. I am supposed to ponder whether four legs are genetically preferable to two. So I am sorry, but I am not interested in this. Dropped after the first episode.

Aho-Girl (2017) (series)

English Expecting any kind of sensible idea or even a calm, relaxed show from a Japanese slice-of-life comedy simply called (translated) "Idiot Girl" is naive. This show is just stupidity of unbelievable proportions that takes human folly and stupidity to total extremes. At the same time, this show is a spectacle full of energy and stupid jokes; however, it does not come across as bad, quite the opposite because of the rather endearing female protagonist. Yoshiko is simply an elemental force of unbridled energy who just wants to have fun, eat bananas, hang around her friend, and experience love. I managed to grow quite fond of this bonkers, shouty and perverted girl. I like people with unquenchable optimism and zest for life, who can give less enthusiastic people strength and can power them with positive energy. So this show, no matter how silly, managed to keep me awake, and sometimes pleasantly entertain me. In addition to Yoshiko, there is the character Akuru, who is the opposite - responsible, considerate, and a good student and their interactions are interesting. I can also confirm that there is a certain spark (except for all the punching). The rest of the characters are more or less there to fill out the show, though. There is more fun interaction between Yoshiko and a bunch of local kids than between the rest of the supporting characters. So as a kind of crazy and refreshing summer anime series just to sit back and relax, it works. This show is, in addition, also unmitigated simpleminded bullshit. So while I am tempted to give it that fourth star because I found Yoshiko's character and the energy in it very refreshing, I am not going to because my brain just cannot allow it and Yoshiko is not here to stuff a banana in my mouth. 6.3/10.
