War Pony (2022)

English I was a little worried that it would be an endless and boring movie. The opposite is true. I hated all the characters at first and eventually grew to like them. It's a film about finding values and starting points that are not familiar to Europeans. The story is really beautiful and shot so realistically that you want to follow the characters and help them, even though they are quite stubborn. Movies set in rural America tend to be slow and revolve around similar themes, but this is an absolute blast that guarantees a rush of emotion and entertainment.

Borders of Love (2022)

English Few people managed to make a drama about intimacy, cohabitation and the depth of a relationship. And here, unexpectedly, it's been done very nicely. Sometimes witty lines occur that allow you to take a moment to breathe in the rush of emotion. I'm glad the entire creative team decided to work hard on the film because it just shows. I was a little concerned about the way the main characters filmed everything on their cell phones, because it would have been wonderful without it. Overall, it's a good film that I'm sure a lot of people will go to the cinema to see.

La Pietà (2022)

English Probably the best film I saw at KVIFF this year. Eduardo Casanova is simply a fantastic director who has a clear vision and knows what and how he wants to convey to the audience. The relationship between the overprotective mother and son has been seen many times before, but never in the form that this film has. The pink home of the mother and son vs. the cool blue home of the father. Two worlds that intertwine and culminate in a great ending. I'm sure everyone will also enjoy the plot shifts to the North Korea, which was another slap in the face for me when I thought nothing could surprise me anymore. The film is simply a 10/10 and when it's released somewhere again, I'm running there.

Horseplay (2022)

English You will either extremely like this film or hate it, nothing in between. And if you hate it, it's for people like you. Finally, a film that properly shows the bizarreness of toxic masculinity, with men secretly being exactly the same as the people they're swearing at. And they're only swearing because they're trying to prove they're better and society is raising them that way. It's true that the characters are all rather template-ly without any broader characters, but that doesn't matter because there's a message here with this film. A must-have watch for all stunted men.

Smoking Causes Coughing (2022)

English I am very pleasantly surprised. This is only about evaluating the film as a whole, not the individual plot lines, because without them the film would be quite boring. A parody of perhaps all superhero movies and starlets with supernatural powers. You simply have to see this because you'll be laughing and watching with your mouth open for the entire 80 minutes.

Reflection (2021)

English Imagine writing a story for a 30-minute film and then turning it into a feature film. That's exactly the case with this film. The subject matter is poignant, at times brutal, at times emotional. The static camera imaginatively puts you in the action of the film, which works great, but is tremendously boring. If I were to remove or cut unnecessary scenes from the film that do nothing to move the plot forward, the film would be 1/3 of the way through. Anyway, this is a fairly hilarious realistic film that shows the war again from a different perspective.

Psychobitch (2019)

English A very well made Norwegian film. The main characters embody opposites that are attracted to each other in spite of everything. A film about a strange relationship between strange people with even stranger scenes. The film was an emotional roller coaster for me, because it's impossible not to be depressed by the way the characters behave and what they do. And despite all that, the story is hugely interesting, engaging and still surprising. I'm very glad I saw the film because it's really worth it! The songs by Emir and Sigrid are just the icing on the cake.

The Kids Are Alright (2021)

English Don't expect any high cinematography. But humor? Definitely! I had a great time. The film works well in its overall context, as virtually everything is quirky and highly stylized. The film is also well cast and surprisingly the child non-actors give excellent performances. I haven't seen the original film, but it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing to compare.

Olga (2021)

English I am absolutely thrilled! I never thought the themes of gymnastics and revolution would work so well. Although the main character wasn't very likable, she worked well and was actually very easy to root for. The film was full of angst, apprehension and tension and combined with the excellent music. (I highly recommend the soundtrack on Spotify.) It is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Not to mention that the film is more than important now. "Free Ukraine!"

Asteroid (2021)

English Somehow it wasn't right... The story didn't grab me, it was more like it flowed and things just happened, rather than our protagonist trying to do something. The whole thing was in a documentary style, which was nice, but towards the end it started to mix in more "cinematic" footage and the whole thing felt like a fist in the eye. The film gives a nice insight into other countries and cultures, but it is not a great work...
