Barbarian (2022)

English I think that there is absolutely no need to populate Detroit with some bugs, monsters, mutants, and similar phenomena, because the ruins of this city are terrifying even without them. Anyway, the film did not deal with people, non-people, or other forms of life, it was actually a story of one house. In this respect, the movie worked great for me, including three separate storylines, but that bug really ruined it for me. Sure, it had everything that would scare an average American so much that you feel the smell of ammonia for a week, but I just sighed disappointedly and said to myself: "Really?" I was really sorry that all three stories didn't intertwine in a different way because there was a certain potential here, and now I can't shake the feeling that the creators chose the easiest way. But the path of least resistance rarely brings the highest quality. It's a shame because this atmospheric affair had a decent potential with me. Well, when Justin Long appeared in it, I knew how it would end up. You know - Jeepers Creepers, Tusk... / Lesson: Unpleasant places often look cozier in the dark. 3*+

Night in Paradise (2020)

English After yesterday's Japanese action horror, Korean creators significantly improved my mood today. I read the official synopsis and despite the listed genre of the film, I was certain that I would see some kind of romantic drama. And I probably would, if the film originated from much more western countries. I would easily classify this drama into the genre, I just wouldn't scare the potential viewer with romance; Koreans approached it completely differently than I expected, which pleasantly surprised me. The final mixture of genres worked almost perfectly for me and despite my initial concerns, I was never bored or nervous about some Asian horror, which luckily did not happen this time. Mr. Park wrote and directed a film in which peaceful drama alternated with frantic action, excursions into the human anatomy, and splashing in bloody puddles. Well, I had fun, what else. / Lesson: Killing out of necessity looks completely different than when someone really enjoys it.

Lowlifes (2024)

English Normally, I'd find myself wavering between two or three stars, but... The expectedly predictable plot took a slightly more intricate turn, albeit not without its flaws. I couldn't help but notice the creators' intentions peeking through, which dampened the surprise factor a tad. Still, I'll give credit where it's due — a well-intentioned effort deserves recognition. Gone are the days when Canadian thrillers were on the level of German comedies/porn —thankfully. Surprisingly, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the film, reveling in its grisly depiction of human anatomy being squished into blood puddles. While I wouldn't classify it as a horror per se, it delivered on the thrills, complete with the obligatory illogical character behaviors. But hey, that's part of the fun, right? / Lesson learned: You never know what will make you put on weight.
