Hope Gap (2019)

English England is well-known for its white cliffs and distinctive gloomy countryside – both of those make me feel melancholic, which is the reason why I’m seeking out movies like that. Hope Gap has a clear-cut premise and apparent stars – Bill Nighy and Annette Bening. While Bill is filled with sadness, Annette doesn’t give him a second to rest. The premise was fine, the setting beautiful but because I’m a man I can’t rate it with more than 3 stars. Annette’s character was really nasty and she realized it too late.

Playing with Fire (2019)

English This comedy fulfilled all that was expected of it. It was released in uneasy times and was enjoyable more than others. Moreover it had 3 perfectly matched comedian actors – John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key and John Leguizamo. A great idea, beautiful mountain surroundings and fresh entertainment that fulfills all your expectations for a good comedy. I don’t really get the rating on this site.

Voldemort: Origins of the Heir (2017)

English It might be unnecessarily long, but on the other hand it is really good for an amateur project. The effects are flawless, acting performances are good and camera is excellent. Moreover it answers a few unanswered questions about Voldemort, and I think that this is the reason why everyone who has been in love with Harry Potter since their childhood should see this.

The Devil All the Time (2020)

English I don’t know why Americans always have the need to show everyone that Middle West sucks, that its people are stupid, their language unintelligible and moreover that in every village you can meet some kind of religious psychopath who is deprived in some way. To be a cop there must be some kind of punishment and you have to be really stupid to be able to live therewithout losing your marbles. Despite that, The Devil All the Time showing you the devil inside the local people has a good premise with quite a good atmosphere and overall it is quite an interesting movie. If only it wasn’t so long and forceful. From time to time I had a feeling that I’m about to faint regardless the atmosphere. The best part about this movie are the performances of the actors. They really had some fun with that gibberish.

Horn of Gondor (2020)

English The story-line is really simple but what surprised me in a good way was that the camera, soundtrack and production is at the level of a solid A-rated movie. It was done really nicely. I believe that the project was carried out with great enthusiasm and those fighting scenes? They were flawless! A lot of people should learn from the creators. Thank you for an amazing surprise and the ending track is, by the way, totally awesome!

Enola Holmes (2020)

English Where exactly did Enola come from? I almost feel like it is some kind of a weapon of contemporary feminists and a statement that every Sherlock has his own Enola. It nicely reacts to one episode of Red Dwarf in which William Shakespeare was made into Wilma Shakespeare. And that joke is more than 20 years old. Moreover it is a pity that this movie isn’t at least funny. Millie is surely great and she enjoys her role a lot. That shouldn’t come as a surprise given that she financed it herself as probably the youngest Hollywood producer of today at the age of 16. But she should have left out the sarcastic comments addressed directly to the camera. After watching the movie I couldn’t figure out what it was all about. So at the end of the day my expectation wasn’t fulfilled and Netflix disappoints me once again.

Sweethearts (2020)

English Maybe I’m spoiled by Scandinavian dramas that are able to create great atmosphere without a single musical tone. To the contrary, in this Czech movie the dramatic atmosphere is completely built on music. A dull melodramatic music that lasted 95 minutes out of total 97 minutes and it took me a while to get used to it. I would probably find some faults with the ending as well because the story that is told in this movie is totally underminedat the end. What I was watching most of the movie were really sad characters whose lives made me really sad. Are people around me really like that? I don’t want to believe that. The characters oscillates between extremes during this movie. But after I finished it I had a feeling that the actors did their best and a lot of characters were really great. Marek Taclík, Lenka Vlasáková and mainly Jana Plodková gave their best performances. In the end I have to say that I was quite satisfied. We film dramas differently here than in the rest of the world but I don’t think that Sweethearts is as bad as it is rated on this site. Quite the opposite.

Booksmart (2019)

English It is true that the director Olivia Wilde is good in many aspects. Considering the premise of this movie, she as a director passed with flying colors. The actresses are good as well and the whole movie has this American high school comedies feel. Without the gender drivel and one boy, who, if he wasn’t trying to get the black girl I would think was a girl, I would rate it with more stars. But the American pop culture sets a clear trend, and therefore I have a feeling that American high-schoolers don’t concern themselves with anything else than LGBT and gender movement. And also, Czech distributors could really have used a different title than this one which literally means ‘Bookworm girls want it too’. The title makes the movie look worse than it actually is.

Coastal Elites (2020) (shows)

English You probably should know the actors and be very familiar with the US for this show to make any sense to you. Coastal Elites opens American topics during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover it is not so much about the actors rather than about stereotypes in America. The most enjoyable, according to my opinion, was Sarah Paulson and not only because she was the only one I really knew among the actors. She analyzed the New York elites and Trump’s voters, who are mostly American red-necks, in detail. Generally speaking it didn’t look like a comedy to me, but the political situation between the Liberals and the Republicans is a comedy in itself.

Bad Boys for Life (2020)

English An unbelievably pleasant surprise. The directors found a way how to film a high quality nineties action movie with a contemporary feeling and in some places even an innovative camera during the action scenes. I almost have a feeling that this is one of the few comebacks from the nineties which was really great. The story is fine, the action is great and with the performances it got back to time of the first two movies. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are even after 20 years the same cool guys with great lines that the viewer enjoys a lot. One of the biggest surprises that Hollywood had in store for me in the last few years.
