Tears of April (2008)

English The film features a local Finnish militia and a former hunter Harjula, who is a bit simple, but all the more good guy. When he witnesses a scene where the Finnish army rape and then mass murder a Soviet women guard, he cannot mentally cope with it. For the first fifteen minutes I was in a mood of hating all humanity, with the Finns being the most disgusting nation in the world to me. After some time, I eased a bit and accepted the fact that war is filthy and every nation committed some atrocities that it would prefer to forget. And as the Northerners are great self-critics, they serve it to the audience with bells on. Luckily Harjula is here and he saves one of the girls. She is pretty, does not speak, but she lived through some horrible things. That, however, doesn’t stop her from setting classic women tactics in motion. Simply a pleasure to watch.

The Yellow Birds (2017)

English A great war drama that truly inconspicuously but all the more intensely calls for action. Add in my favorite actress, Jennifer Aniston, who precisely reflected my feelings from the movie. And I was really curious to see her act, as she does not usually appear in similar drama roles. While the beginning was rather slow, the ending brought more than a healthy dose of emotions. I believe there are a lot of American films with the theme of military troops in Afghanistan, but none of them is like this one. Watch it till the end, the ending is really worth it.

Rogue Trader (1999)

English This is the case where the title (Rogue Trader) captures precisely what is going to happen. Personally, I did not watch it because of the economic theme, but because of Ewan McGregor and I kinda hoped I would feel the atmosphere of the nineties’ England. While music achieved that perfectly, the rest was quite boring.

Operação Outono (2012)

English The first thing I remember about this movie is the moment of surprise, when during the story about political machinations I began to find out what really happened in Portugal in the past. Naturally I had no idea, so it really surprised me. For a political thriller portraying that period it is not badly filmed at all. However, it’s a shame it is really a pure political thriller, so there is a wide range of moments where you feel like taking a nap. Watching the whole film is worth it, however.

Midnight Sun (2018)

English One of many sad romantic flicks, which makes you cry and simultaneously raises awareness of a certain deadly disease. In this case it is about the so-called XP syndrome, which causes allergic reaction to sunshine. Plus, I was quite surprised by Patrick Schwarzenegger, who may one day act even better than Arnold Schwarzenegger… But he will never look better than him.

Midnight Special (2016)

English I wouldn’t be that critical of this film. Sure, the premise is really crazy, but the filmmaking craft is more than solid for a realistic sci-fi. The same goes for actors who have gathered in a more than decent cast. Kirsten Dunst, Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton and Adam Drivers are among those today’s actors that are nice to watch and usually do not disappoint. If you accept the premise, count on not being disappointed by its effectiveness.

Out of Africa (1985)

English Beautiful shots of Africa are alternating with at times infantile behavior of Meryl Streep, trapped in a vicious love circle.  However, due to the fairytale-like impression, beautiful shots of Africa, beautiful music and epic ending, Out of Africa really belongs to the golden fund of cinematography.

Rings (2017)

English This happens when you are a producer and have a desire to slightly rape the original instalment. When one of your colleagues did it years ago and was successful, why couldn’t it happen again? All you need is to come up with some different shots for the video tape, slightly worse actors, slightly worse director, and the result is here. A cheaper copy that is lucky that it tries to tell the story a little bit differently and brings some interesting details into it. As a whole, it was naturally completely unnecessary.

Re:Born (2016)

English Qualitatively this film is like the typical American B-listed movie. Only it’s a Japanese film, so people tend to overvalue it. Luckily, the second half sets in motion some stylish and endless action, so the audience can enjoy good, although at times shaky, camera that helps to forget for a moment about the meaningless story.

Sound of Noise (2010)

English The genius of some musical numbers is balanced by the relatively average story, which more or less has nothing to offer. You can see that the creators of this movie were figuring out what story could fill what they actually enjoy. And that is the musical numbers that I didn’t believe could be actually created. Sound of Noise becomes the most interesting musical movie I have seen because where else you can experience the symphony of a dying patient or a robbery. And not to mention the symphony on the topic of construction machinery.
