New York Stories (1989)

English A loose sequence of unconnected short stories, some of which are quite good, some of which are terrible. Francis Ford Coppola’s in particular is among the latter. Overall, it’s weak.

The Toy (1976)

English Pierre Richard is the toy of the son of an executive in a tragicomic story with a social-critical background. No, that sounds bad, let me try again. It’s Richard’s best film. Yeah, that’s better. An amusing reflection on whether money can buy everything, including human dignity. And can it really? Watch this film and see for yourselves, it’s worth it.

La Chevre (1981)

English The clash of opposites of hardass-loser works flawlessly and the viewer is thoroughly entertained. Some scenes are weaker (the allergic reaction and the one with the gorilla), but the ending with the broken footbridge is absolutely brilliant.

The Fugitives (1986)

English A great comedy, which you'll appreciate all the more if you've seen the woeful American remake. Richard and Depardieu meet a total of three times and each time it was worth it. But the biggest star of this film for me is not those two, but the deranged veterinarian as he treats Depardieu.

Ransom (1996)

English A game of cat and mouse, but without the mouse being scared of the cat. A remarkable thriller that puts forward the argument that you don't negotiate with kidnappers even at the risk of endangering the kidnapped person's life. I identify with that and Mel Gibson couldn't have played it better.

Cry, Onion (1975)

English I don’t like onions very much, but the stinky Onion Jack is irresistible. An amusing goof where a properly thrown onion is better than a gun. They haven't shown it on for a long time, but I still remember the onion throwing.

Zorro (1990) (series)

English A loose sequence of more or less stupid stories that serve only as filler between commercials. But when I look at the other ‘gems’ you can find on TV these days, I have to admit that Zorro isn't that bad.

Wild at Heart (1990)

English "Fuck Me. Fuck Me," or the pleading of the wonderfully slimy Willem Dafoe in one of the memorable scenes in a typical showcase of madness by Lynch – you can think what you want about it, but you can't take your eyes off it. Three stars for Lynch’s poetics and one star for Dafoe’s rotten teeth and blown off head.

The Confession (1970)

English The French view of the political monster trial of Rudolf Slánský in communist Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. A praiseworthy feat that is worth watching, but you won’t find it on commercial TV.

Enemy Mine (1985)

English A decent low-budget science fiction film that is marred by an utterly idiotic ending full of clichés. Wolfgang Petersen's first Hollywood film was quite successful, but it is a big step backwards compared to his previous and amazing The Neverending Story.
