Biography

Weerasethakul is one of the most influential and unique filmmakers of the new millennium. He studied architecture at Khon Kaen University and a MFA at the Art Institute of Chicago. He directed several short films in the 1990s, and in 1999 he founded the production company Kick the Machine, making his feature debut in 2000 with Mysterious Object at Noon. He began to resonate on the international scene with Blissfully Yours (2002) and Tropical Malady (2004), which won awards at Cannes among various festivals, then in 2006 he released Syndromes and a Century. His breakthrough came in 2010, when he won the Palme d'Or at Cannes with Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. He has since directed the feature films Mekong Hotel (2012) and Cemetery of Splendour (2015), in addition to several short films and installation works such as the SLEEPCINEMAHOTEL project for the Rotterdam Festival. Memoria (2021) received the Jury Prize at Cannes.
