Jules O'Loughlin

Biography

Jules O'Loughlin specializes in film, 3D and high definition cinematography. In 2004, he graduated from the Australian national film school, AFTRS. His award-winning body of work includes commercials, music videos, short films, television and the features Kokoda: 39th Battalion, September, In Her Skin, Dark Frontier, Sanctum and Wish You Were Here. His television work includes Redfern Now and Black Sails.

In 2006, O'Loughlin's first feature film, Kokoda: 39th Battalion was accepted into the prestigious Camerimage in Poland. The film was also nominated for an Inside Film Award and Film Critics Circle of Australia Award.

In 2006, September was the first feature to be produced by John Polson's Tropfest Feature Program. Directed by Peter Carstairs, September screened at the Melbourne, Toronto, Vancouver, Pusan, Rome and Berlin international film festivals–as well as in the forum section of the Cannes Film Festival. September won O'Loughlin the 2008 Inside Film Award for Best Cinematography.

In Her Skin, which starred Guy Pearce, Sam Neill and Miranda Otto, screened at the 2011 Milan International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Cinematography.

In 2009, O'Loughlin worked with Kriv Stenders on the feature Dark Frontier. It premiered at the Adelaide International Film Festival, was in official selection in Montreal and Palm Springs and screened at St. Tropez Cinemas des Antipodes.

Sanctum, executive produced by James Cameron using Fusion 3D Camera System, was shot from 2009-2010 and has made over $108 million worldwide since its release. In 2012, O'Loughlin reteamed with Cameron for his feature documentary James Cameron's Deepsea Challenge 3D, for which he was nominated for an AACTA award.

From 2010-2011 O'Loughlin shot Kieran Darcy-Smith's Wish You Were Here, which earned him a gold ACS award and an AACTA nomination. The film opened the 2012 Sundance Film Festival to critical success.

In 2013 and 2014 O'Loughlin shot the first two seasons of the television series Black Sails, produced by Michael Bay, as well as the critically acclaimed Australian television series Redfern Now. His work on Redfern Now earned him another gold honor at the ACS awards and an AACTA nomination for best cinematography in a television series. More recently, O'Loughlin has shot two films in the United States: The Whole Truth, which starred Keanu Reeves and Renée Zellweger and By Way of Helena, which starred Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson.
