He was born in 1934 in Vienna. He studied film direction at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Centro di Cinematogra a in Rome. In the mid-fifties, he got in touch with artists and filmmakers who focused on non-gurative a non-narrative art forms. With his early films, he is considered a pioneer of the Viennese School of formal film. Since the sixties, his work has been positively accepted in the USA, where he gave several series of lectures. He co-founded The Austrian Film Museum, contributed to the founding of the Anthology Film Archives in New York and designed the collection of avant-garde film at Centre Georges Pompidou. In the last decades, he focuses on teaching activities, musical production and cooking. Since 1980, he has been professor at The Academy of Arts in Frankfurt am Main.
