Bruno Dumont

Bruno Dumont was born in the Nord department of northern France, in Bailleul, the small town in French Flanders where he made his first two films, The Life of Jesus (1997) and Humanité (1999). These two films, which were acclaimed in Cannes, introduced Bruno Dumont as a singular filmmaker, in opposition to contemporary French productions. Although his cinema is grounded in a very concrete reality, it escapes social realism in favor of a transfigured, humane reality where tragedy and burlesque, going hand in hand, reach their climax.
