ASC member John Bailey was elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in August 2017. He has been a member since 1981 and a governor for 14 years. He served for three years as the vice president and chair of the Preservation and History Committee, which initiated the Films on Film series in collaboration with the Academy Film Archive and the Herrick Library. He serves as the Academy’s representative on the National Film Preservation Board at the Library of Congress; each year, this board selects 25 titles for the National Film Registry. Bailey has photographed Ordinary People, The Big Chill, Silverado, The Accidental Tourist, Groundhog Day, In the Line of Fire, As Good as It Gets, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Must Love Dogs, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, The Anniversary Party, American Gigolo, Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters and the LA Latino comedy How To Be a Latin Lover. In February 2015, he was honored by the American Society of Cinematographers with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Bailey directed the 1994 film noir thriller China Moon, starring Ed Harris, Benicio del Toro, and Madeline Stowe, as well as Mariette in Ecstasy (1996), adapted from Ron Hansen’s acclaimed novel. He also directed David Hare’s Via Dolorosa (2000), an adaptation of a play by David Hare, and The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (1991), adapted from the show starring Lily Tomlin. He photographed and directed the Imax concert film NSync: Bigger Than Live. Bailey has been married to eminent film editor Carol Littleton since 1972, a sort of record in Hollywood dual career circles.
