Naomi Uman

She came to live in a village near the Ukrainian city of Uman in 2006. All eight of her greatgrandparents had come from eastern Europe and she wanted to see if she could get a taste of what their lives had been like. In the process she became part of a small village. She continues to live and work in the village, teaching children, working the land, making paintings and starting a fledgling residency program for people interested in the intersection of art and agriculture. She has directed the short film Kalendar as a tribute to the place.
