Biography

Jeon Soo-il (b. 1959, Sokcho, South Korea) is a leading South Korean director of art-house movies who also works as a screenwriter. He studied film and theatre at Kyungsung University in Busan, followed by a master’s and doctorate degree at Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7. His debut film was the medium-length The Wind Echoing in My Being (1997). The Karlovy Vary festival screened his next two films The Bird Who Stops in the Air (Sae nun Pey sok sun eul g rin da, 1999) and With a Girl of Black Soil (Geomen tangyi sonyeo oi, 2007). In 2009, he was in competition with the contemplative Himalaya, Where the Wind Dwells (2008), followed by I Came from Busan (Yeong-do Da-ri, 2009) and the gripping drama Pink (2011), which he also edited. He shoots his films through his own independent production company Dongnyuk Film.
