Sarah Gavron debuted as a director with Brick Lane (2007), earning her a BAFTA nomination, and competed in New Directors at San Sebastian. Previously, for television, she had harvested other awards including the BAFTA for Best New Director for This Little Life (2003), which she helmed for the BBC.
