Of Native American origin, he grew up on a reserve called Listuguj in Quebec. He studied film production at Concordia University in Montreal and started his career directing short films like File Under Miscellaneous, which won the Jury prize at the Toronto ImagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival. For his first feature film, Rhymes for Young Ghouls, presented at the Toronto Film Festival in 2013, he was named Best Canadian Director by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle. He second film Blood Quantum was shot in Mohawk territory.
