Biography

Mexican filmmaker trained at the National School of Film Arts (formerly CUEC). She has a BA in communication sciences and studied for an MA in documentary film at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She also studied with German filmmaker Doris Dörrie at the Creative Writing Workshop in Berlin and trained in directing actors with Argentine filmmaker Natalia Smirnoff. In addition, she completed a concentration program in documentary film at the Filmart Center in Serbia and in content development at the Pontifical Javierian University in Colombia. She has directed and produced feature films, documentary series, short films, and commercials. Her projects have been exhibited at festivals in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, the United States, Germany, and the UK.

During her filmmaking career, she has participated in screenwriting and project development workshops at IMCINE and the DocsMx Documentary Film Festival. She won first place in the Escribe Cine A.C. Screenwriting Tournament and was a finalist in the screenplay contest organized by the Guanajuato International Film Festival. She has received FONCA grants on three occasions. Covarrubias is a founding member of Cine Bajo el Cielo, a civil organization that promotes the creation and exhibition of films with social and gender perspective in rural and urban communities in Mexico. She is the director of production and marketing at Estudios Churubusco Azteca, a prestigious production company with over seventy years of experience.
