Unusual musical fantasy, co-scripted by Dr. Seuss, follows a young boy's (Tommy Rettig) nightmares about his tyrannical piano teacher. Hans Conried is the fiendish Dr. Terwilliker, who keeps 500 boys locked in his bizarre castle and makes them practice day and night. The often surreal cult favorite for all ages co-stars Peter Lind Hayes, Mary Healy. English At times, I felt like this movie wasn't far from the fairy tale creations of Herschell Gordon Lewis, which I don't mean as an insult, but it just felt quite cheap in places. I wouldn't look for Seuss in this, although it's not entirely devoid of substance. The musical numbers are quite nice, but the overall set design is rather unremarkable. ()
