Diane Court (Ione Skye) is a clever and gifted high school student who is charmed by Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack), a lovable but not particularly bright young man. However, Diane's father (John Mahoney) is anxious that nothing should stand in the way of his daughter's success. Romantic movies have been kind of a mess lately, but Cameron Crowe still has something going for him - most of the time - and obviously had a lot going for him at the beginning of his career too. A beautiful film that doesn't necessarily strive for sentimentality at all costs, but is entertaining and features great performances, whereas today you wouldn't guess that John Cusack was capable of something similar.
