English Robert De Niro only delivers his acting standard, which is indeed very solid, but his typical style is only seen once throughout the entire film, and that’s quite little. The other actors tend to overact, which is partially the fault of the screenwriter. Even experienced director Michael Caton-Jones, who usually maintains a solid pace in his films, did not quite succeed here. The film drags on quite boringly, the dialogues are slow, there’s not much of a drive to speak of, and practically there are no action scenes. ()

English The psychology in City by the Sea is too simple and the film is too chatty. The actors perform more with their mouths than with their eyes. And it’s needlessly long. The story could have been told in eighty minutes as a TV family drama. ()
