The War of Independence having been put down, Garamvölgyi Aladár is now in prison at Kufstein. Corina, Aladár's former fiancée, teams up with dr. Grisák, a solicitor, to have Garamvölgyi safely put away for the rest of his life. In an effort to defame Garamvölgyi Ádám, Aladár's uncle, they have Straff Péter, a clever spy working for the Cabinet Noir in Austria, positioned in the old man's house. Eliz, daughter of Ankerschmidt, a nearby Austrian landowner, reveals the spy's plans, then applies, in a letter taken to Vienna by her father himself, for the release of Garamvölgyi Aladár. Thanks to the intervention of Eliz, Aladár is finally released from prison. During the flood of the Tisza, the two families get permanently manacled together in their struggle to save their estates, and the two young people, Eliz and Aladár, also find happiness in their love for each other.
