English At first glance, this is a film about an unlikely encounter between two different personalities - a young repatriated soldier named Gianni and an old adventurer, who, for different reasons, are brought together in a "business partnership" to collect ammunition in the northern Italian mountain ridges. While we can observe the specific situation of post-war Italy (well-known from other Italian films) in the character of young Gianni, such as unemployment, poverty, and the hesitation between struggling at home and emigrating for a better life, in the old wanderer, we can see the desire for freedom and independence from others, the victory of an unrestrained nature over the orderly and boring life of the majority society (in addition, perpetually at war, as evidenced by the landscape in which most of the film takes place). The entire film is based on the mutual dialectic of these two contrasting characters (reminiscent of Olmi's debut film The Job) ()
